Today, I’m going to teach you three things that will give you relief from TMJ.

In my opinion, the root cause of TMJ is related to recent dental work. If just one tooth is out of place when you bite down, it can affect your jaw and create a cascade of effects on the rest of your body.

However, if you have pain on the right side of your jaw, there could potentially be an issue with your gallbladder. Basically, if the gallbladder is swollen, it can irritate a nerve in the diaphragm that goes right up your neck and may lead to pain in the right side of the jaw.

The best things to do for TMJ (check out the video for a full demonstration):
1. Massage the muscles on the opposite side of your jaw from where you feel the most pain.

2. Stretch and massage the buccinator and masseter muscles inside your mouth.

3. Exercise the opposing jaw-closing muscles.

I was diagnosed with TMJ in my early 20's overnight - woke up and couldn't open my mouth on my right jaw. After seeing tons of "experts", years later I've found it was completely related to my neck and shoulders being severely out of alignment (reverse curve of the cervical spine). None of the "experts" ever told me that, the TMJ specialist wanted to shave my teeth down so they'd "fit properly" and I kept saying, "how did it change, literally, overnight?" Because it WASN'T my jaw or teeth, it was my neck and muscles connected to the out of alignment neck and upper back all along! It was awful. It took 12 years to figure this out. Even the chiropractor I went to at the time only worked on my jaw to try to help it, not the neck and muscles connected. I finally found a corrective chiropractor in 2019 and only since their focus on correcting my neck have the jaw issues almost completely resolved. EVERYTHING in our bodies is so interconnected, one issue is not so cut-and-dried, and there's nearly always some underlying cause.

As a dentist, I will say that most TMD is caused by stress. It strains the muscle of mastication as well as introduces dysfunction into the TMJ’s.

Licensed Massage Therapist in Florida 32 years and your description is excellent. CEU class in TMJ years ago, led me right into treating with great successes. I always include temporalis with masseters and intra oral to include pterygoids. Patiently teaching in clinic, and encouraging at home, self treatment with teeth brushing. A few gall bladder issues did present to patients surprise, as also related to right side pains and acupressure meridians! Well described Dr. Berg!!!
