Our gut, and the tons of bacteria that reside within it, regulates many of our bodily functions, from creating vitamins to controlling our immune system, our brain function, and, of course, our metabolism and weight. The gut is the number-one place to investigate when healing the body of any chronic symptoms or diseases. If your gut isn’t healthy, you’re not healthy!

In this episode of my Masterclass series, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about why prebiotics are vital in creating a healthy gut. These are the things your good gut bugs love to munch on. In turn, they produce beneficial compounds such as short-chain fatty acids, which have been shown to help prevent things like colon cancer.

Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. His podcast, The Dhru Purohit Podcast, is a top 50 global health podcast with over 30 million unique downloads. His interviews focus on the inner workings of the brain and the body and feature the brightest minds in wellness, medicine, and mindset.

This episode is brought to you by Gut Food, Rupa Health, ButcherBox, and InsideTracker.

17:00 shirtaki noodles
20:00 taking pre or probiotics when you already have bacteria overgrowth can be bad, which is why guidance is ideal

We just started a small crop of jerusalem artichokes this year for the first time. Regenerative food crops and other practices are important to us here and when I learned about them helping with gut health and the fact that I can feed the stalks and flowers to our goats and chickens. I was glad to hear you mention them here :)

I follow a lot of what William Li says about what foods to eat. But I don't agree with eating mainly plants. I was a vegetarian for quite a while and my health was not very good during that time even eating a very varied vegetarian diet. I started adding in healthy fats grass-fed beef, salmon, eggs nuts olive oil and I am way healthier now.

I'm a 57 yr old male, have worked out daily most of my life, Powerliflting, strongman and bodybuilding and have tried every imaginable diet and eating protocol you can think of. Keto was good but something was lacking. Did carnivore for 3-4 month stretches on 3 different occasions with great results but again was not firing on all cylinders but only when I add more fibre (berries, oats, sweet potato, honey etc) is when I feel my optimal in strength, endurance, mental clarity and recovery. My weight is down and leaner than in my 30s. I think some people based on their gut microbes can consume more carbs and live a more healthy life. I get my blood work done every 3 months and I am healthier now than I was in my 30s. Every blood marker is perfectly in the healthy range.

This question is specifically for Dr. Mark Hyman. I am a Canadian and follow your blog and you tube faithfully. We are unable to order your product to be delivered in Canada. Can you shed some light when we will be able to do so?

I wish I had known more of this when my husband was sick with cancer between 2003 and 2011 when he passed. I knew about the cytokines and the natural killer cells, interleukin-6 Etc but I didn't realize that these supplements you are talking about could have increased those or changed those to help him overcome. I hate it when I find out things too late😢😢😢

I love green bananas. I grew up eating lots of them in soups, mashed and sauteed with onions and garlic, add a dash of sour cream, yummy. Then again, I was raised in a banana-producing country. Plantains I used to eat a lot, cooked or fried with refried beans, cheese, and sour cream. I cut back on them and many other foods like legumes when I was diagnosed with prediabetes. Regardless of the benefits, I do not trust foods that taste extremely sweet or are too starchy anymore.

Jicama tastes like something between an apple and a turnip, with a nice, fresh crunch!

Thank you.Artichoke can be cooked by boiling for 10 minutes, to save energy. One hour is too long.Green banana, cut them in half’s, freeze, then put in stew or soups. Why ? It is because if left outside, it become yellow, high sugar.Big bowel of salads with many items. To consume my greens leafy vegetables, process huge amount in food processor to reduce volume and to reduce time of chewing.Reset your gut by eating no processed foods, no sugars, no dairy and it’s products, no alcohol, prebiotics, probiotics, poly phenol and resistant starches. Most traditional cultures eat fresh organic high fibers foods. We evolve with scarcity, that is why, Hazda people preferred honey ( sugar), our biology evolved, wired to eat sweets, but our environment now of plenty get our machinery confused. Our genetic machinery evolved to work better when we eat less ( Hence health benefits of fasting).

MDs know nothing about all this. All MDs seem to be trained as robots for (Kaiser, etc) and Pharmaceutical companies. All doctors should be trained as Wholistic doctors first and then specialize.
