Rib Pain? Upper Back Pain? #shorts

Have you ever experienced a sharp or stabbing middle back pain between the shoulder blades? It can be difficult to take a deep breath, rotate, flex, or extend the spine. In many cases, this can be the result of a rib that has slightly shifted. This can cause the muscles around the rib to guard and tense up. People with hypermobile connective tissues may experience this more frequently than other people.

If the pain is the result of something seemingly random that came on suddenly without any traumatic incident (car accident, falling down the stairs, etc), then it is likely a rib that has shifted a little bit. I’ve seen people’s ribs “subluxate” while doing something as simple as brushing their hair! It can yield a pretty intense pain in the middle back and it often scares the hell out of people - this should be the case and it isn’t something to be afraid of.

We don’t have any specific exercises in this post, but it is important to MOVE! Go for walks, do some isolated breathing into the upper back, rotate the torso, flex and extend the upper back, foam roll the upper back, and do some upper back strengthening exercises. #backpainrelief #backexercise

This happens to me all. The. Time. Multiple times a day. Sometimes I can put it back myself and sometimes not. The best thing I’ve found to put it in place is a bumpy roller with an indented part to fit your spine when you roll. It doesn’t always work though. Sometimes I worry that I’m doing more damage by pushing or twisting it back in so often but the pain is terrible if I don’t.

I’m not overweight and I’ve never had a desk job. Always active. Plenty of walking and upper body movements. But there have been plenty of times when I’ve wanted to jog or workout and then five minutes in that happens and everything stops.
