First time someone’s explained this to me - makes sense now why hanging was making my back worse and not better 🙈 thank you!

You have to have your feet behind you kind of pullout you back to get the right angle for gravity to pull on the discs without strain. However he’s absolutely right, you need stability for this to work. I do both as a regular routine to maintain a bulging disc and have been able to get by with no pain about 80% of the time. Best things I’ve done so far

I cure my 2 years of constant back pain (caused by mild scoliosis), i also lost the ability to sit (feel pain if i sit more than 10 minutes) by strengthening my lower back through mcgill big 3, RDL, and stretching it using cat cow pose. Hanging doesnt cure it, but not make it worse tho. So yes STABILITY WORKS SO MUCH, it strengthen the core muscle and take away the pressure from the join n spine to the muscle.

Side note : learning how to brace our core is the key for combating low back pain for me.

It all depends on what the diagnosis is. I had a physical therapist hook me up to a spinal traction machine and it made it way worse. Turns out I had an extra vertebrae and L6. Make sure you get proper diagnosis before trying things that could make it worse

While hanging only works for some people with back pain, does the the McGil big three work for everyone who has pack pain? If yes, does that mean that McGil is practically universal?

I do it more so because it helps with shoulder pain

It works wonders for your shoulders. Especially rotator cuff issues/shoulder impingement syndrome. It is the absolute best thing you can do for that.

Can we just acknowledge that the girl not stretches anything? She just goes from an active hang to a dead hang. That's why her shorts lower. You can clearly see this with her scapula or just look at the distance her ears have to her arms/shoulders in the beginn and the distance at the end.

Does anyone know of a similar PT to Aaron located in Philly? I'm sick of meeting doctors who have no clue about strength training and their only advice is, "Just don't perform this exercise" or "Dont lift."

My back starts hurting and throughout range of motion in my lower back when I used to hang. I used to feel a click and this pain. Lingering pain for a while. Been so long, idk anymore. Stopped doing it and only do it minimally now. Now fully releasing/hanging.

I have flexion intolerance and spinal instability, but i find hanging helps relieve pain. I think it is similar to a spinal decrompression machine... some is good, more is bad. I just hang for a few seconds at a time and try to brace my core at the same time.

*Immediately reverses the dead hang by jumping off and decompressing your back*
