There are various hints that Hector is in fact related to Miguel. One of these being his shoe polish. Hector uses shoe polish to help in disguising Miguel as a skeleton. The question is, why would he carry around shoe polish when he doesn’t wear shoes himself? Given that Miguel’s family are in the business of shoemaking, it gives weight to the idea that Hector carries it around as a keepsake in honor of the family that he supposedly abandoned.
