I have no ability to relate to people on an emotional level. I dislike being on either side of those types of conversations so much that I socially isolate.

My therapists always have a hard time with me because of that. It's really hard having it, and I rely on a physical sensations map for different emotions to begin to understand what I'm feeling.

What’s so wrong about the second one? My Alexithymia is more in the middle after working on it.

When the alexithymia is intergenerational because of intergenerational C.E.N.
Childhood emotional neglect.

I guess if the person is really your friend and not just an acquaintance, then the response is inadequate. It's not taking enough of a personal interest maybe? Perhaps, after offering sympathy, you might instead ask, "What happened? Do you want to tell me more about it?" and then proceed to offer emotional support. Then later in the convo, it might be appropriate to ask if they're going to start job searching.

Dr. Marks, you are so helpful. I am sure that the 2nd response would have been me. But now I see that people need to vent.
People do often say that they just need to vent and that is an unnatural concept for me. But I realized that my way is not the only way.

As someone with Alexithymia, perfectionism and an eating disorder my therapist once told me that i come of as angry all the time, because of past Problems. And because of Alexithymia i have trouble figuring out my own emotions. However i can still sometimes feel whenever someone feels positive, or negative in the emotion spectrum.
Some people might say:"You can't just lose emotions." Yes, but you can struggle with or even lose the ability figuring your emotions out. For me it devoloped over a matter of about 1.5years, for some it can devolop in a different time matter.

Perfectionism
People with Perfectionism (like me) are created over time aswell. The need to be "perfect" can devolop because of high expectations, wanting to be perfect or like before, past traume or problems.
Usually people with Perfectionism tend to be pushing themselves, and sometimes burn themselves out, which leads to further set backs to the "goals", which there makes them try even harder and worsen the problem.

Eating Disorder
Talking about Perfectionism, eating disorders can come along with "Perfectionism", because of bad body image or dislike of looks.Eating disorders can be more serious than the other themes, as an Eating disorder can follow up to health issues and even death. There are a bunch of eating disorder, so if you want to find out about them you can just search *Types of Eating disorder* on google.

If you identify yourself in any of these, i'd recommend getting a therapist to talk about your issues and problems.

I personally think it’s important to distinguish between the kind of alexithymia that may cause you to have a flatter/more blunted affect, a lower capacity to feel certain emotions, and/or a lower level of empathy or ability to relate to other people and the kind of alexithymia where you feel so, so much, you just aren’t sure what you’re feeling and/or why you might be feeling it.

I experience a bit of both sometimes and can generally know and put words to what I’m feeling, just that some of what I feel can be harder for me to pin down, differentiate using words, describe in words that are easier for people other than me or my family to understand, feel or express in “typical ways” or feel or express at “typical levels”.

Well I have problem recognizing my own emotions but it seems more like I'm numb most the time. I can understand other's emotions but I lack the social ability to know how to react. A lot of the time I'll just go "Oh" and be unsure of what I can say to make them feel better. Sometimes I'll even ask if there's anything I can do to cheer them up. There's something wrong with me, I'm just not sure what it is. I didn't really learn social skills as I went silent when I was younger and I let go of everything I cared about because no one cared about what I did. I care about the things they care about but I just don't form opinions anymore and most the time I don't feel anything unless it's extremely positive or extremely negative.

It's really tiring to pretend to be someone you're not (especially at school).
