So you don’t have a pendulum squat. Well here’s how to make one with just a couple of bands and a smith machine. First, get your bands and wrap them around the top of the machine, loop the ends through, then attach it to the bar, and that is it. The added assistance from the bands will now make the exercise easier as you get closer to the bottom, since the bands will stretch apart pulling the weight upwards, hence assisting you when your quads are fully stretched. However, as you go up out of the hole, the bands will slowly go back to their resting length providing you less assistance and forcing you to do much more of the work. Thus, as you get closer to the top, the exercise now gets harder. This is exactly what you want from a squat pattern, since your quads are always going to be weaker at the bottom, and stronger at the mid-top part of the range of motion. So when you make the exercise easier at the bottom when your quads are weaker, and harder in the middle when your quads are stronger, you are now able to provide the muscle a much more consistent stimulus. So as opposed to a normal squat where the bottom position is the hardest since your quads are weakest, a banded squat will make the entire exercise hard, since as your quads get stronger, the weight now gets heavier.

In any squat pattern, the hardest part of the exercise is at the bottom, since biomechanically this is where your quads are the weakest. However, by using bands, you can now assist yourself out of the bottom, making the exercise easier in that position. Thus, as your quads get stronger, the weight now gets heavier, since the bands provide less assistance on the way up. All in all, creating a more consistent stimulus!

The is looks great. One thing that makes me sceptical is how it takes tension off the lengthened position which is the most muscle growth promoting part. In biomechanical studies the muscle usually shows lower activation in the stretched position of a lift but in studies examining growth, that part of a lift is the most growth promoting.

I used bands for my hack squats. Some Mario Rios meat rider will tell us it’s not functional but I’d they also weigh 120lbs soaking wet. The bands helped my knees massively and allowed me to focus on my quads.

Hanging chains from your barbell also has a similar effect. As you pick more links of the chain up off the ground it will get heavier.

You actually can do this exercise even at home. Just lean against the wall and do it. You can make the exercise harder by changing distance between your legs and the wall(the further you place your legs the harder it gets), wearing more slippery shirt/hoodie or using more slippery wall.. The hardest variation of the exercise is doing by one leg.. I'm already able to do for reps that however i totally can't lay down extremely deep..

I was avoiding smith machine in general since i started lifting cuz everyone told me that smith is basically an easier and less effective way of doing standard compound movements.But, when i started doing smith machine squats i saw a potentional on that excersice.
