Pro tip: Exercise regularly and then you'll be like "lol posture?"

It's almost as if the real enemy is long stretches of time spent not moving.

This is a very good point along with the "Sitting is the new smoking" trend. It is important to realize that stagnation, whether it be physical or mental, is to be avoided to live a fuller and healthier life.

This is complicated. I better just stay in bed to be safe.

As a physiotherapy student, I approve this message. Breathing is more economical and relaxed when you are in a natural ("bad") posture, which enables the parasympathetic nervous system to activate. Switch your posture many times during the day and take small brakes to move around. Posture is affected by many different variables such as mood and alertness. If you have won the gold medal or been dumped by your partner, your posture will be different as it signals your mood to other people. If you feel well rested during the day or are coming home after a night shift feeling exhausted your posture is likely to be completely different.

This is the best news I've heard all day. I hate sitting with "good posture" but I do love to sit in a variety of "bad posture" positions

As someone who's always sat "in a weird way' (feet up on my chair. twisted in silly positions, switching often, restless) this is quite validating

I am not surprised. Like, even when, I was a kid told to “sit up straight!” I was always thinking, how could forcing your back into an uncomfortable and unnatural posture be better for you?

Also note that exercise is important to prevent back pain. You need strong, endurant muscles to prevent your joints from compressing or over-extending when under strain. Basically, when you sit in one position for a long time your muscles get tired, which transfers the weight they were supporting onto your joints and ligaments, eventually damaging them. The stronger your muscles are, the longer you can hold a position without those muscles getting tired. Additionally, you will be able to handle harder impacts like running, jumping, lifting, etc without damage, since the muscles will be able to counter-act the forces and prevent them from damaging your joints.

Remember to exercise!

Exactly right. Moving around and switching up your position regularly is the name of the game.

I’d really like to see this literature. Could you post it in the description, please?

"Some spinal pain is linked to low sleep, low physical activity, and high stress."
As a college student doing Computer Engineering, good thing I'm at least TRYING to do a weekly workout. That actually explains quite a lot.

This is exactly how I feel as someone with scoliosis. Playing piano for years, I was always sitting up straight practicing for hours and it KILLED my upper back, then I would relax and move around a little and it would go away.

This is literally how I go throughout the day, always changing positions and always making sure I'm perfectly comfortable. Never had back pain. That's why I recommend investing in a good ergonomic chair, especially if you need to work from home.

All the official guidelines seem to be 'keep your spine as straight and immobile as possible', which is completely insane considering its a structure that is literally made to move and bend.

Yup, I’ve heard that the best posture is one that changes every 10-15 minutes. Doesn’t matter if you slouch sometimes, because stagnation is the real enemy

I feel vindicated for sitting in that "bad posture." Thank you AsapSCIENCE!
