Today we’re going to talk about how to help stop a person from going from a prediabetic state to a diabetic state. This is a very important concept.

The difference between prediabetes and diabetes has to do with your blood sugars.

• With prediabetes, your blood sugars are around 100-125, with an A1C of 5.7-6.4%.
• With diabetes, your blood sugars are 126 and greater, with an A1C of 6.5% or greater.

When we’re talking about diabetes type 2, we’re talking about the elevation of sugar in your blood. A normal blood sugar level should be about 80. This is equal to about 1 tsp of sugar in all of your blood. Your body can make this sugar itself. You don’t need to consume any sugar. The average person consumes about 31 tsp of sugar every day (including carbs).

Insulin acts as a filter that keeps excess sugar out of the blood. The body does not want high amounts of sugar in the blood. Your body considers excess sugar to be very dangerous.

If a person is consuming a lot of carbohydrates and eats frequently, they could have a huge amount of insulin being released. This insulin is working very hard to keep the sugar down. But, high levels of insulin are toxic to the body as well. So, your body starts to reduce insulin by creating resistance. This is called insulin resistance.

The problem is that the body still has to keep the blood sugar under control, so it begins to produce more and more insulin to try to keep the sugar at a normal level. This could go on for a long time until, eventually, the pancreas is exhausted and can’t pump out that much insulin.

At this point, if you keep consuming carbohydrates and eating frequently, the blood sugar is going to go up. This happens because the insulin is going down. Over time this could turn into diabetes.

To help avoid all of this, you can cut out the carbs and start doing intermittent fasting.

Doctors are focused on blood sugars. They typically do not measure if you have insulin resistance. 90% of people that are prediabetic don’t even know.

If you look down and you can’t see your feet, you may have insulin resistance.

Symptoms of insulin resistance:
• Frequent urination (even at night)
• Brain fog
• Can't go long without being hungry
• Cravings
• Tired after meals
• Tingling feet

I'm confused why can't this be a lesson in high school? This should be in health class.

I was prediabetic two years ago. Got serious about my health, implemented much of your advice (among others), and lost 80 pounds and all my labs are perfect now. I was told my entire life it was hereditary when it was really just family eating habits passed down generations. Boggles my mind in retrospect.

I was diagnosed as diabetic last year... it didn't make sense, I was not overweight... 189 lbs. But numbers don't lie. I went kicking and screaming into using a meter... but I had to as I had a glucose of 486+ a year ago and a 7.8 A1c, Doc tried to put me on meds, but I went for a keto diet. It was hard as I have always had a sweet tooth (cookies, cake, donuts, sodas, more cookies). 4 months ago I was down to a 6.8 A1c and glucose levels of 180-140 (Doc tried to get me on meds again, but I thew out the prescription), 4 months after that I am now at a 5.2 A1c and 98-110 glucose levels and my weight was 184 lbs... all because I just changed my diet to keto/paleo. I found the comments in all the YouTube videos were very helpful for me so I am adding my experience.

I was 226 5 months ago with those symptoms. Changed my diet to Keto and I eat once or twice a day then fast at least 18 hours. I now way 176 pounds and feel much better. I do 4 simple exercises 4 times a week. 100 pushups, 100 leg lifts, 100 curls and I walk 1.5 miles at 3mph on treadmill. Less than an hour a day. I only shop the outside isles and the spice isle at the grocery store. The rest is poison.

I’m now low carb and intermittent fasting. I feel so much better. I’m not losing a lot of weight but I’m trimming down. I’m so glad that I’m not hungry and not going to the bathroom all the time.

3 weeks ago I started Keto & Intermittent Fasting when my doctor said I needed diabetes medicine because my blood glucose was 151 and my A1C was 6.4. I was going to the doctor for uncontrolled blood pressure, it was 190/100 even on 3 meds. Now I lost 17 pounds in 3 weeks, got my blood pressure down to 135/75 and today my blood qlucose is 128. I am so excited to see what the future brings!!

I stayed on the no sugar an virtually no carb diet for four months (124 days). My H1c dropped from 5.9 (pre-diabetes) to 5.2 (normal). It is an awful diet (no bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, pizza, desserts, soups with any of the prior ingredients, or fruits. Yet, it did work for me. I hated every minute but it kicks ass.
