I am 4 weeks Post Op for a Laminectomy with Titanium Disc replacement, Fusion of L4 L5. Three night stay in hospital, immediately after surgery my excruciating right leg pain and numbness was gone! The “clean up” was long overdue. The hospital follow orders to give me a lot of pain meds. They made me sick, all of them. The staples on the bone graft hurt the worst. The surgical sight had 20 staples, they drove me nuts for two weeks, surgeon removed them, and now I can sleep. I take three Tylenol at night, that’s it. I do not bend, twist olift anything more then a plate. I have a stem cell bone graft over the hardware that will take a full twelve months to fuse. I struggle with all the precautions, but I stay very focused on a good outcome. I am thin, never smoked and I am use to being extremely active. I am learning patience, my only help is a heaven send, my 20 year old son who does everything I can’t. I can shower, brush teeth, get dressed, take four short walks a day and I have a comfortable brace I only wear when I’m up. I go back to work in two weeks, along with physical therapy after work. I believe in three months the fusion will began to form, but it will be worth all the precautions to get my life back by October 2023.
My advice for anyone, after you’ve done all the pain management crap and still no long term relief, don’t wait too long, get three surgeon consults…let that simmer. Trust your gut on the surgeon who is not pushy about surgery. I feel confident with my decisions, and I suffered years of pain that I no longer have! My back was broken.

For my laminectomy everything that could go wrong did go wrong. I started with no back pain but leg pain and ended up with leg pain and back pain. That 2-3 day hospital stay turned into two weeks. Got DVTs that went to my lungs with extensive pulmonary embolisms in both lungs. Six months later I am still on a walker and looking forward to another surgery. Finally, I can't talk to my surgeon since he died a week after surgery.

As a Fitness Instructor, I thought spine surgery will never be a part of my life. But 3 days ago I finally had to have it done and so far, I am so grateful I did .
I hope for a recovery and being back to normal. My message to all: do not neglect your pain, talk to your doctor. Do not be scared!
Thanks for your great video !

2 years ago I had a laminectomy for a herniated disc. I wasn’t able to prepare for surgery beforehand. When I was 30 I had a herniated disc which caused me great sciatic pain in my right leg. It took me a little over a year to get better. I got a few spinal cortisone injections and stayed off my feet for 2 weeks. This all happened when I was pregnant with my 3rd child, so afterward is when I got treatment. Fast forward 30 years I started getting sciatica in my left leg. It was off and on for a year, then it got worse for about 8 weeks when I had to use a walker to get around. When I sat it felt like rocks rubbing together in my butt when I sat down, but I got relief when I lied down. One morning it sat on the toilet and could barely get up. I ended up on the floor in the most excruciating pain, like I felt like dying with every inch I tried to move. Ultimately we had to call an ambulance to take me to the hospital. From there I had emergency surgery the next day and it was a godsend. Now for the past 9 months or so I’ve had pain in my right thigh and sometimes in the calf. Some weakness in that leg when lifting to go up a step. Pain when trying to sleep. Ugh.

I have a L5 S1 surgery in a month and i have to be honest i’m terrified. Not of the surgery but of the thought of it not getting better or it actually making me worst. I suffered with horrible sciatica for over 3 years and if this surgery doesn’t work i dont think so could do it for much longer mentally. I hope all that are in recovery have a successful one and you heal fully and ill pray the same for myself. wish me luck

Wow! I like the fact you speak for personal experience and you are an actual surgeon. Those two things combined help me make this decision I am scared to do. But I am tired of taking narcotics and I am soon to graduate from school. I won't be accepted to any job if I can't pass a drug test with pain killers to deal with the pain daily. I have had spine injections to help with the pain, but I am now determine to have surgery. Thank your for sharing and encouraging me to do this next step to live a better life, free from constant pain due to C5 disc.

Had a l4l3 discectomy a few weeks ago. Pain has not changed from before the operation. My main problem was that it took me over 2 months to convince the medical profession that I was was in pain. They wanted me to go to physical therapy even before they would give me a MRI. I spent 2 months living in a recliner in my family room. The muscles in my body wasted away. Now I not only have the pain, I have weakness all over. Still living in my recliner. 80 years old and ready for the grave.

Thank you doctor for sharing your experience and giving great advice. I had a spinal fusion 2 months ago, L5-S1, still going for physiotherapy but am so scared of doing anything wrong, like any movements and I feel a little pain I worry ☹ I guess that's normal. I look forward to full recovery after few more months.

Ty. Just had L5S1 fusion 8 days ago here in southern NH. Wow. My sciatic pain has disappeared and I can’t believe it. I am sore and have been focusing on many small walks. Today I feel better than I did yesterday. Every day small improvements. I did however experience a back spasm. I have never had an experience like that. It all froze up on me. Scared the crap outta me. I don’t like the muscle relaxers due to the feelings it gives me. So ice has been my new best friend. Also my back brace is key with the ice packs all day long. Thanks for listening
