For people who have a hard time watching the video. We both promote maingaining. You can call it what you want but if your body fat stays the same and you don’t get more fat then you’re not bulking. You’re maintaining your body fat and building muscle. To do this you look in the mirror and if you’re not getting fatter then you’re doing it right if you’re getting leaner then you need to eat more. Unfortunately I’ve done about 12 videos on this and people don’t understand the basic concept. When you go on a lien bulk you’re actively trying to get an extra calories looking for more calories trying to bulk up even though it’s a slow bulk it’s not maintaining because your body fat is going up if you build 5 pounds of muscle and add 5 pounds of fat in the process it’s not mean gaining that is lean bulking

Greg, I've consistently recommended a surplus of around 200-300 calories above maintenance for those who are at a healthy body fat level and want to focus on building muscle. That is a standard lean bulk by any normal definition.

You've chosen to focus on one single video from 7 years ago simply because of the title. I only used that title at that time because "gain muscle without fat" was a highly searched for keyword and so it was a way to drive traffic to the video. However, in the video itself I recommend a 200-300 calorie surplus and roughly half a pound of weight gain per week. Those numbers are clearly well outside of the "maingaining" figures you give.

I've also always stated that gaining some fat during a bulk is normal. I encourage people to minimize it, but I don't push the idea that they're going to gain muscle while keeping their body fat the same. I've also always recommended standard bulking/cutting cycles to maximize long term progress, which clearly you do not. Anyone who follows my content and the hundreds of videos and social media posts I've done knows this.

You've also mentioned my more recent "gaintaining' video from a year ago, which is odd because in that video I am literally encouraging people to eat in a surplus and not be too leanness focused if their goal is to maximize muscle growth. The only time where I don't recommend a surplus is if someone is carrying significant excess fat. Aside from that, I recommend a typical lean bulking approach just as the vast majority of other coaches do.

You then show the pics of me at 230 pounds as evidence that I'm "against bulking". No. I am against DIRTY bulking, and the distinction between lean bulking and dirty bulking is obvious.

Lastly, I didn't respond to "Editor Steve" because I don't even read comments most of the time since I'm too focused on trying to create more videos.

So no, we are not in agreement since I recommend that people lean bulk on a slightly larger calorie surplus, that they not be afraid of gaining a small amount of fat in the pursuit of maximizing size/strength, and that they follow a more typical bulking/cutting approach. (Again, this is for those at a health body fat level who want to focus on building muscle - if they're over weight or just carrying a decent amount of excess fat then of course a surplus isn't needed)

Stop gaslighting people into thinking that maingaining (30 cAlORIe sURPLuS) and lean bulking (100-200 calorie surplus) is the same thing. This is what Greg does, he changes the nomenclature of the terms he uses whenever it’s convenient for the point he’s trying to make at the time.

coach greg: it is impossible for a seasoned bodybuilder to gain 4lbs in a month even on steroids ... also coach Greg: I gained 4lbs of muscle in a month using product I sell ... also coach Greg: sean is a hypocrite

Greg: if you eat in a 200 cal surplus you are goint to get FAT!
Yates: eat in 300-400 surplus for optimal muscle growth!
Greg: SEE DORIAN MR OLYMPIA AGREES WITH ME, HE PROMOTES MAINGAINING!

So Greg will respond to Sean making a short joke video on maingaining but he won’t respond to Revival Fitness’s 2 hour long video (which has been out for about 2 weeks at this point) that accurately critiques Greg’s inconsistencies on what maingaining actually is? Not enough clicks I guess

Greg's channel in terms of integrity and quality content, dealing woth actual problems in the fitness community, has gone down. He is all about views and controversy and what's popular these days. I liked his video he did in the old house that actually focus on people doing a disservice to the fitness community and dispelling myths aswell as giving good training advice, rather than nit picking one of the fitness communities most honest, no bs and all round good guys.

Gotta be honest coach, you and Sean are my top 2 fitness influencers on YouTube, and have been for a long time, but this is 100% a miss on your part, and from reading the comments, most people share the same opinion.

There's nothing wrong with bulking, as long as its slow and not too excessive, depending on how lean you want to be.

Stop calling it maingaining and just call it lean bulking. 30 calories above maintenance is technically a lean bulk. Maingaining is basically that but saying those 30 calories don't actually matter so don't worry about tracking it.

Maingaining has just become a term used to create confusion and drama at this point.

I think Sean was pretty consistent in saying a small surplus. When he mentioned 1/2 lb a week, that would suggest about a 250 calorie surplus. The question is what do you exactly mean about mangaining, from my understanding it means eat at matinence and inevitably you'll be eating in about a -100 or +100 deficit or surplus. In his post he mentioned eating about 200 calories above matinence to gaurarntee gains, where as eating at matinence could risk being in a deficit and not making gains. The point is a 200-250 calorie surplus guarantees gains, while also gaining small amounts of fat.

Lean bulking is not the same thing as maingaining. Part of Coach Greg's problem here is that he never seems to actually define maingaining and just uses different definitions depending on what suits him that day, or whatever lets him yell at people in his Coach Greg Voice.

Lean bulking is eating in a surplus of a few hundred calories to optimize muscle growth and accepting that you will gain a small amount of fat over time as well. Once your body fat gets higher than you want it to be, you do a brief cut and then go back to lean bulking. Maingaining, at least the way Coach Greg usually seems to use the term, is trying to stay at the same body fat percentage while also gaining muscle. This has been scientifically shown to be suboptimal for muscle building. Not to say that maingaining doesn't work at all, but if you lean bulk and cut you will end up with more muscle and the same body fat percentage at the end of the day.

Sean : you should bulk

Clown Greg : SEE? HE SAYS TO MAINGAIN! HE PROMOTES THE SAME EXACT MESSAGE! WE BOTH AGREE ON IT!

Its not really the same though, is it?

He's talking about a lean bulk...but still bulking.

Couch Greg says to eat 30 calories extra a day...but also says you cant track 30 calories a day...
