There's always a handful of people who get upset when I make these posts because they think I'm discouraging people from doing cardio.

At the end of the day I'm just giving the facts and people can do with that information whatever they want.

I always include the fact that I still recommend performing regular cardio of some kind for general health purposes, and I'm in no way trying to encourage anyone to skip it. (I'm literally writing this after having just finished a session)

However, there are a ton of people whose primary goal is to lose body fat and who end up on the wrong path by trying to create their deficit through actively burning calories with exercise and then only loosely monitoring their diet, when they'd usually be much better off to flip these priorities around.

Yes, there are always exceptions, and if someone's energy expenditure is very high (this is usually the case for people who have some kind of active daily hobby or do frequent sports/martial arts etc.) and their diet is reasonable to begin with then it might still work out just fine.

I'm speaking to the majority here, and most people are not performing such a high volume of cardio that it's going to have a massive impact on things.

Not to mention that if building/maintaining muscle is a top priority, you ideally wouldn't want to be doing tons and tons of cardio anyway since beyond a certain point it will start interfering with weight training recovery and performance.

Do your cardio. But if the goal is fat loss, controlling calorie intake will be the most important factor for the majority.

I do it just because I enjoy long walks listening to music. That's it

The most important muscle, the heart. Never skip cardio.

I do cardio to improve my stamina, blood circulation and overall health.

Cardio isn’t overrated when it comes to preventing cardiovascular disease. Lack of cardio creates stiff arteries. The fact is that most of us Americans only run when we’re chasing the ice cream truck. I’ll keep my cardio thanks. It’s not about losing fat, it’s about having a healthy cardiovascular system. I like that I can get through a high intensity workout without getting blown up.

I'd add that the missing part in a lot of fat loss programs is that gaining muscle mass increases the number of calories your body requires. I found putting on muscle made losing weight so much easier because I didn't need to go on an extreme diet because my body is naturally burning more calories just for maintenance of the extra muscle I gained.

I love walking for 1.5 hours at a moderate pace with some music. Easy on my joints (I’m a pretty tall and big dude) and it helps me learn about my neighbourhood and stuff.
Thanks for the great content as always Sean!
You’ve helped me change my body and be more healthy and dynamic, something I’ve wanted to achieve for years but never had to tools/knowledge to achieve it.

If you diet and do cardio you're losing fat quicker and you're also building stamina. That's a double win for me.

Thank you! You worded it much better this time. I hate when people shit on cardio

I’m a distance runner. When you truly are a runner you come to the understanding that running and other main forms of cardio is really only good for one thing- and that’s getting stronger or better at the thing you are doing. It’s painful. It’s time consuming. And although I’m not looking to slim down (I’m a skinny teen) I can tell u with utmost confidence that lots of cardio is just not worth your time from a weight loss perspective.

I just do it to improve my cardiovascular strength... I used to work out and still feel weak in the heart .. So, I started cardio and it has been really beneficial for me.

I lift weights, do HIIT, and eat fairly healthy for weight loss/control.
I do long cardio for heart health.

Most people are taking this advice wrongly. Sean is NOT saying "DON'T DO CARDIO.", he is just saying "A GOOD DIET is more important for weight loss."

I started doing both. Cardio game is stronger now, used to be at 66 BPM at rest now I’m at 52 and 40 sleeping. Cardio helps in my eyes and makes me motivated.

I actually lost weight recently by intermittently fasting. It was my intake. It was always my intake.

Cardio gives me good feelings, Energy and pleasure.
If sport can trigger that, then it is not overrated.

To be honest, I just do cardio for the fun of it, many people claim it’s boring and such, yet for me, there a certain “primal” enjoyment on it, idk, and it’s really motivating to notice how after every session, I’m quite more tolerant to physical exertion and can sprint for a much longer time :3

Said another way: you can blow one hour of cardio by eating one cookie. You can never outrun a bad diet.
