15-18% for me. 12% is not a joke, I bet most people who think they are 12% are more like 15 or 16%. Sustaining that is not fun. Genetics plays a role with ab definition too. Some people have ab outlines @ 15%, some still have a small pouch stomach - skinnyfats especially.

12% is not sustainable without working out a ton and overly monitoring your diet which would be very stressful for most. 14-16% I would say is more ideal.

From a longevity perspective, lower is better within the healthy range, provided the person does a lot of weight-bearing exercise. (Fracture risk increases slightly at the lower end of the range.)

Also true: Almost NOBODY actually knows their actual percentage, so the phony precision of 12% was super obnoxious.

I totally agree.

Because of an illness. I lost 22kg in about 9 months between the beginning of the pandemic and Xmas 2022.

I went back to weight training to stimulate appetite and to bulk up.

I was 8% body fat this time last year. I'm around 14% now and definitely feel better.

There's a little difference with the looks I get from women (it seems younger women prefer really lean, but women over 35 prefer a less shredded look), but I'm a family man so this isn't a concern for me.

Regarding effort, I'm of Somali extraction and an ex recreational boxer so 12-14% is an easy one for me. Friends of mine would struggle to be 12%, despite being stronger/ fitter 🤷🏿

You can have visible abs at 20% body fat if you have enough muscle mass.

As long as it's under 20% and above 6% there's nothing to worry about for a man as long as he feels good at that percentage.

For women 14-27% is great as long as you feel good.

There's no perfect percentage for everyone and you should find out where you are at your best. My best friend (male) feels best at 10-11%, I (female) feel best at 19%.
