This comment is from a while ago, but I thought I would respond. I think there needs to be fine balance between strength and flexibility. No we can’t sit “straight” all day while working at a desk, but we can teach ourselves to move into different positions while sitting at the desk. I like the analogy of a willow tree…strong but flexible.

Are posture braces a bad thing to use? I saw one on Amazon and I'm tempted to use it while also doing daily exercises.

Hey man, just seen a few of your videos on postural related topics. I would like to provoke a discussion with you or anybody here who has an idea to put forward. Not an attack on the information this channel puts out, just looking for a few more opinions on the matter.

For the past few years I’ve seen this hunchback internally rotated posture become demonised and for good reason as spending a significant amount of time in any position changes our natural posture affecting a multitude of things but ultimately affecting our ability to move.

The recommended treatment has been usually taken from 2 angles. 1st being to develop strength in the opposing muscles in the back and better our ability to use them as well as lengthening the muscles in front, which I agree is completely necessary. Then the 2nd angle would be to improve our positioning in activities that encourage this humpback posture by doing things like “sit up tall” or “don’t slouch”. So heres my point of conversation. Are these recommendations doing anymore harm than good. By teaching ourselves to be very rigid and tight with very little room to move and with proper form in every activity we part-take in we lose the very movement we try to protect and in place we have a much greater amount of tension in the back muscles and a heightened risk of injury in the positions we purposefully avoid. By sitting and slouching we allow our bodies to take the position that requires the least amount of effort to maintain, we have evolved to be this way.

I refer the the work of Peter O’Sullivan on his work with back injuries, to summarise some of his most prevalent work he found there is little to no correlation between posture and back pain.

In conclusion, instead of trying to improve our positioning in these positions in an attempt to rectify some issues and potentially creating new ones maybe we should focus more on spending less time in those positions and getting people moving freely in a more relaxed manner and not hypertensive. Yes creating strength where it is needed and improving our ability to use all of our muscles but not considering ourselves as fragile beings that could break with a gust of wind.

I apologise for the rant,
Any input would be appreciated,
Dillon.

Is it just the muscles or can bones also become warped with time?

Hi. Love your vids and do the exercises suggested with improvement. Does hunch back develop over years being in a repetitive position or quicker than that? I have been DC with kyphosis at 50! But then again, I spent 13 years of that in ICU nursing, then the next 19 years hunched over a desk for hours teaching my autistic son and st the computer- which do YOU think caused it? I’d love to know

Handbags over the shoulder also cause it.
