Separating regeneration and adoption, I understood John 1:13 to be referring to a past-tense work “who WERE born” that logically precedes what John emphasises in his gospel and so comes first in verse 12 “who receive him and BELIEVE (John 6:47, John 20:31) in his name, he gave the right TO become children of God” - present/perfect tense.

Thank you so much for this video! I love that you’re approaching it from neither an Arminian worldview nor Calvinist worldview. I can’t wait for your exploration of the irresistible call. I’m currently wrestling with my Calvinist education.

Given the right to be children = adoption
Born of God = regeneration?

When you say regeneration precedes to faith this happens in a instant, wouldn’t that entail the believer would know “ exactly “ when they are saved, I’m confused ....

I would whole-heartedly agree. The passage in John states clearly that those who believe in Jesus are BORN by the will of God. We become children of God when we believe and we are born again by the Holy Spirit. The passage in Galatians 4:1-7 we see that as CHILDREN we cannot inherit. "as long as the HEIR is a child, he does not differ at all from a SLAVE although HE IS ONWER OF EVERYTHING." Children do not inherit...only SON'S (full grown sons) inherit. And Paul concludes with this: "Therefore you are NO LONGER a SLAVE, but a SON, and if a SON, then an HEIR THROUGH GOD." In adoption the child of God is "adopted"...placed in the family of God as a full grown son and will inherit. God adopts those who are already His born children. We err when we place a westernized understanding over the text.
