This was a huge misconception that I had back when I was a Protestant. God works in funny ways because the Hail Mary is my favorite prayer to say now. I say it all the time.

I wish it was simply an honoring, reverence, or invoking of her help.

But in truth, you guys do attribute the honor to Mary due *alone* to God. You say that your *whole* body, soul, and life can be rightly offered to her. You attribute to her divine power—the power to soften hearts, enlighten minds, and work salvation for God’s people. You would never do that to a living saint—you would never ask them to soften an unbeliever’s heart. You say that she deserves to be uppermost in your affections, and justify that by saying “to love her is to love God.” But you’d never let a man excuse an idolizing of his wife that way (“she is uppermost in my affection, and worthy of all my actions is just my worship of Jesus”).

I think that a lot of misconceptions related to Mary in the english speaking world is due to its limitation of words

Since the modern idea of Worship seems to be, that which only is to be offered to God, shouldnt we just say we Venerate or Honor Mary rather than say we worship Mary and then have to explain that the idea of worship has changed over the years and that we do worship Mary in an older understanding of the idea of worship? What advantage do we have in defending our belief about Mary in this way? Is this because the Church has taught in the past that we worship Mary and this needs to be explained? thanks

I build altars to my ancestors and pray to them... not ancestor worship tho

I have always tried to give Catholics the benefit of the doubt on Mary. I've listened carefully to their arguments as to why their veneration of the BVM is not worship. All I can say is that, when all is said and done, I'm not buying it. Other than the "Hail, Mary" almost no prayer to her is seeking her intercession with God, but is instead requesting gifts directly from her hand. I firmly believe Catholics when they say they do not intend to worship Mary. But I do not come close to believing that they actually do not do so.

This gave me great insight: from an apologetics stand point, it sounds like we need to first ask, “what is worship? “

Does a protestant or Baptist worship, or do they simply go hear a man attack Catholics? Is prayer worship?

As Catholics we have a Mass that is clearly worship, we also have adoration, that is also clearly worship, we also have stations, etc etc.

So are we worshipping Mary?

Finally! no one knows that worship mens worthy of praise. Bishop Sheen says, Father John Calvin erroneously changed the meaning to "adoration". In some towns judges are still called "your worship." Thanks Father! more please!
