Lowering Blood Pressure in 5 Minutes

With support from the National Institute on Aging, CU Boulder researchers are running a clinical trial to learn more about what the ultra-time-efficient exercise known as Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training (IMST) can do for human health, such as reducing heart attack risk and giving athletes an edge.

“It’s basically strength-training for the muscles you breathe in with,” explains Daniel Craighead, a postdoctoral researcher in the Integrative Physiology department. “It’s something you can do quickly in your home or office, without having to change your clothes, and so far it looks like it is very beneficial to lower blood pressure and possibly boost cognitive and physical performance.”

“High blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which is the number one cause of death in America,” said Craighead. “Having another option in the toolbox to help prevent it would be a real victory.”

Deep breathing cured my asthma, reduced my blood pressure, and helped fight stress. Done correctly it took me till another level of training which is something I've practiced for over 40 years. My conditioning is as good if not better than when I was 20-30 years younger. Fact! Higher recommended.

Eat a few cloves of garlic, 🧄 use sea salt in moderation, strength training or brisk walking. stay hydrated (stop worrying serve God go to church) love yourself and your neighbors if possible, you’ll be just fine. Deep breathing when you wake up.

Also, one can take a deep breath, and hold it as long as possible. This trains your body to process carbon dioxide better thus increasing overall oxygen saturation in blood.

Hi, I have done fasting/liquid diet to lower my blood pressure, and I have noticed that every time I go to see my doctor after doing this, they inform me that my blood pressure, while not the ideal 120/80 or lower, is within an acceptable range (124/80, 124/82, and 124/78 respectively). Usually when I go to the doctor, my systolic, diastolic, or both are well above where they should be. That is why, even when I go to the doctor after fasting/liquid diet, I always tell them, "my blood pressure will probably be high, because it usually is when I come in here." I was diagnosed in 2022, with an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), which would explain why I would continue to gain weight despite restricted intake of solid foods, even though my blood pressure was reduced.

I've been experiencing high blood pressure in the evenings despite taking BP meds in the mornings and taking the additional, (if its over a certain amount) meds in the evenings.
I got a Gazelle last week and today I decided to do that for a little over 10 minutes and it has brought my bp down to a less scary level within minutes of my heart rate returning to normal.
I'm trying to get my muscles to stop getting the lactic acid soreness so soon into the workout so I can go longer.
Right now anything over 6 minutes is painful.
But yeah, the exercise increases my breathing so that may be why it lowers my bp in the short term.
Hopefully the exercise will lower it for the long term.

Question: if one does intensive cardio + strength training, doesn't he/she get the same effect? I guess this device is destined for people that do not have the ability to perform these activities. Please, update us if you have any upcoming scientific publication in the works.

A link to the 2016 University of Arizona study (here and and CU website) would have been helpful. Methodology more than saying 5 minutes a day would also have been nice.

No matter what your blood pressure is, if a cuff is too small for your arm size, or the clinician even slightly over-tightens the Velcro fit, you will have a higher blood pressure reading. Understanding this fact is the single most effective way to confirm normal, when all else fails. A savvy Doctor can obtain the desired reading readily by making sure the cuff is the proper size for the patient's arm, and that the arm is elevated just a half inch above the heart, at complete rest. Marketing high blood pressure meds to millions who don't really need them is currently the fifth most lucrative Big pharma cheat in America. Tight cuff? Take expensive drugs for life. Watch the dominoes fall as your side effects cause slow-motion chaos within your body's systems. All of them. How did this uneducated dude discover this? Well first, go buy the three finest HBP monitors. Second, use a couple hours to write down 200 carefully taken readings using varying cuff tightening marks on the device cuffs, that you put there, using a Sharpee, at three precise tightness points. Finally, after multiple readings, you will be able to know what fit is ideal, for a consistent normal reading. With this tactile knowledge, you will never tolerate a tight cuff, nor a pulled-tight cuff-fit again. Why? Because you know very well the proper fit sensation, after your focused, private experiment. You're welcome.

I would be interested in knowing if this raises intra optic pressure, ( IOP) and puts glaucoma patients at risk, much like playing trumpet has been show to do.

How does this technique mesh with sleep apnea, and the use of CPAP and BiPAP machinery ?

My good buddy, Jim was quite a heavy drinker and lately, his doctor told him to cut back on his drinking as his blood pressure has shot up to dangerous levels. So he has been quite the good boy, lol and he also told me he has been religiously following some great exercise available on Healsonate and he thought it was really helping him.

Does doing the IMST exercises increase the amount of Nitric Oxide, which can also have an impact on hypertension by relaxing the lining of the blood vessels?
