Working as a kidney doctor, I found that my patients were often unaware of just how important diet and lifestyle were and how often they felt unsupported by generic advice to “eat healthy”.

The home cook in me hated hearing this, so I set out to find a better way. I began to combine my medical training and love of food, making videos of simple recipes that were based on science and packed with flavor. Instead of just saying “eat healthy” to my patients, I could give them the resources they needed to make a real difference in their health.

Kidney doctor, passionate home cook, and YouTube sensation Dr Blake Shusterman empowers people to proactively manage their health by stepping into the kitchen. The author of several cookbooks with over 100,000 YouTube subscribers, The Cooking Doc® believes anyone, at any age can transform their health with small changes that make a big difference. Based on science and packed with flavor, Dr. Blake’s simple recipes have inspired home cooks everywhere to change their diet, retrain their taste buds, and transform their health.

Dear Dr. Blake Shusterman: THANK YOU for sharing such valuable information. At one point, my blood pressure was 210/110. After losing 80 pounds, exercising, eating low sodium (1, 500 mg of sodium per day), eating home-cooked meals instead of eating in restaurants and eating junk food at fast food restaurants, my blood pressure is 127/74. My blood sugar is in the normal range and I no longer have to take Metformin. I still continue to take one Perindopril tablet (2.5 mg) per day.

I never had a problem with high blood pressure until I started exercising and losing weight, I’ve lost 10 lbs in the past month, I’m in the gym 6 days a week, I do HITT sprints twice a week, I don’t eat much salt, everything I eat, I cook. And I have been intermittent fasting 3 to 4 days a week and eating a low carb diet.

61 here, 6'2 & 97kg. My bp has hovered around 140/95ish. I stopped taking bp meds 3 weeks ago. I don't smoke nor drink. Changed my diet, reduced salt and sugar substantially. Go on walks/ aquajog regularly. Eating healthier foods, more fruit and veg. Eating 2 cloves of raw garlic, crushed & cut into small amounts swallowed with water. Adopted Wim Hof breathing techniques over the past 3 weeks and have taken a cold shower every day. Would like to see the bp go down further but shall see.

I'm 66 & my BP went from 156/98 down to 128/88 in 1 hr & 40 minutes. How? Its winter & all the windows are closed, so I opened them up & breathed in deeply fresh air - lots of trees in our area. So it came down via oxygenation. Based on this, we're going to get a big plant for the living room & one for our master bedroom.

Thank you Dr. very pertinent advise. I already do things. I don't smoke, Cook my meal with low salt, watch my weight, as for the exercice it is quite difficult because of some physical limitations, but there are things I will try. My objectives are to reduce as much as possible my medication. Have a good and healthy day. God Bless

At 61 years old my blood pressure is around 135 over 87 sometimes 140
June 2nd 2023 I left work. 6 weeks later I'm off my blood pressure medication and now my blood pressure around 115 / 72. Of course it fluctuates but for some reason it's now normal, the only thing I can think of is I left work. Retire as soon as you can

A chemist's suggestion:
The herb called Alchemilla vulgaris is very effective in lowering high blood pressure.
You can boil this herb for 6 minutes and drink the water.
English name of this plant: Lady's Mantle.

I'm 61 I'm in better shape than most men half my age, but I've been into weight training my entire life, the average person would rather take a pill than exercise

Im struggling with smoking. Tried many times but a stressful life keeps me coming back. Im in construction management and its a super stressful job and while not actually true a good ole puff just eases the stress a bit. I feel like i need a different job to actually quit. Longest i have gone is 2 weeks lol. But it’s literally killing me so i need to do it

I'm wondering if "High Blood Pressure" is a thing? Because here in America the norm is 120/80. But I found out in other countries it's 140/90. Why is that? So far no doctor has answered that. On a personal note when my blood pressure is 120/80 or a bit lower, I'm dizzy and nauseous. But when my blood pressure is higher than that I'm fine. So, it had me thinking. Blood pressure has to be individualistic.Or is there really such a thing as "High Blood Pressure?"

Thank you, Dr! That was truly inspiring! I was afraid that if I exercised, my BP might go higher.
