The stab wound may be shock, but deciding that the heart attack is too "in medias res" for 911 is something else. 😂

Can confirm as an emt (former) the stress and panic effectively tanks your IQ and reasoning skills. Especially if you are calling for yourself or a very cherished loved one, some of the best calls are from the 2nd+ person calling because they saw a crash

Its weird but the first person to call will likely be panicked and frazzled so someone who took a little longer to call is more likely to be calm and clear in their commutations, also much more likely to respont promptly and accurately to instruction.

When i fell from a 2nd story onto a cement floor and metal toolbox with my head, all the adults in the room froze in panic. My older sister, who was probably 12 at the time, was the one to snap them out of it by screaming call 911 repeatedly. Everyone else was just in shock, but we had been taught repeatedly about 911 when growing up, and it auto kicked in for my sister.

Your brain isn't working clearly when you are sort of dying

I guess both of those are better than the reaction of "no, it's fine. Don't call anyone. I'm just going to lay down"

I was so freaked out that I defaulted to my training and gave the operator a nine line.

I once woke up in the middle of the night to the smoke alarm beeping down in a first floor apartment, and after it turned out it was just smoke from an oven I, for some reason, thought it was important to tell the emergency line operator that it had been broccoli gratin.

I used to work in tech support for an electronics company for stuff like tvs and a person called from a shop landline for a repair update and refused to leave the building they were in while there was an active fire even with a security guard in the background telling him to put down the phone and gtfo.
I ended up having to tell him i was ending the call and he needed to call us back from somewhere safer then hing up while hearing them protesting as the call ended.

Many peoples first reaction in an accident is shock, so many times I’ve seen people bounce up like nothings happened when they have cuts and bruises, they all say like “oh I’ve gotta go home I just wanna sit down” and it’s like no you gotta get checked out first

"Fine thanks"

Been there. I went into an ER and gave a rambling explanation and then they found out i was hours from dying of heart and liver failure. They said i should have been borderline comatose and were shocked i drove myself and carried on a conversation

Pro tip: Spec into calming presence when trying the "Hotline Responder" job. It gives a passive buff that has a 20% chance to remove the "mania" debuff from shocked callers and a 10% chance of removing "confusion" from wounded callers.

Real life terms: Learn to speak calmly, concisely, and patiently. In due time, the caller will follow your groove.

So true. It's not just a question of can you handle it, it's how your brain thawsl itself out to start handling it. As stack overflow that HAS to refunction.

I can imagine the person who got stabbed trying to withhold as much information as possible if there's something criminal going on

I’ve called 911 before after witnessing someone collapse in public

I’m very proud of myself because I was very straight to the point and I got my phone out to call 911 extremely fast

I did not expect myself to react so well in an emergency situation, it’s mind boggling how different people can react in unexpected ways

I'm probably the guy who has stories about him. Last year, I got my knee split open, took a little nap, and woke up to a still bleeding knee (I could see bone). I proceeded to wrap said knee up, get dressed, and drag myself to the emergency room because "it wasn't a big deal."
Luckily, they managed to stitch me back together, lol
I now refer to October 5th (the date of the accident) as "got to keep the leg" day (celebrated my first anniversary of the accident this year!!)

This drives me crazy to the point I revert to a caveman when I talk about emergencies or to my doctor, I just point at the problem and repeat the problem "Fire, fire, fire!" Or "Pain here in chest meat"

No time for anything else.
