Update: I appear to have caused a big debate. I am aware that nymphs/naiads/dryads aren't exactly the same as mermaids. However, my point is that they share a similar concept: nature spirits that use their beauty and cunning to lure others to their doom (unless I'm getting that wrong too lmao).

Idea for freshwater merfolk: Tend to be smaller, though groups that dwell in wider bodies of water, like large lakes and wider rivers, can reach saltwater sizes. Stronger upper bodies so they can drag themselves across land to get from one body of water to the next during droughts. Usage of typically landlocked materials in construction, tool making and accessory making. More contact with humans and all of the benefits and consequences that come with it, like easier trade and more frequently being hunted. They may even have the ability to make fire since they would have easier access to flammable materials and more above water solid surfaces. Groups of freshwater merfolk tend to be more isolated from one another, resulting in different groups being wildly different in physiology and culture.

I'd imagine the appropriate name for a volcano mermaid would be a salamander mermaid. In old European tales, salamanders represented fire, so it would basically mean fire spirit mermaid.

There is actually a physical difference between mermaids and sirens that for some reason has been largely forgotten by pop culture. Sirens have f***ing wings. They both are women with fish tails but sirens also have wings.

A story I'm working on had the mermaid character have bioluminescent markings that flash hypnotically as part of her "sailor charming" bit kind of like an anglerfish luring prey. Also, her abusive foster mother strong-armed her to sink ships and steal the stuff on board so that she (foster mom) could pawn the stolen riches off to pay for her hotel room and booze for herself. The mermaid feels guilty about it but the alternative is getting beat, so she only steals from pirates and calls sea creatures to take stranded sailors to shore before they drown.

My brother in law is a cartoonist and he once imagined arctic mermaids to have quite a bit of fat to survive in the frigid waters. The amount of hate he got for that was kinda hilarious
