I "faked" bad vision to excuse not doing homework. I said I couldn't see the board from my new seat, so I didn't know there was homework. 6 year old me didn't understand I was supposed to be able to see the board from any seat.

Sometimes kids "lie" when in reality something is wrong and their brains are just kind of protecting them from the truth of it/don't know exactly what's wrong yet. Like I've seen one woman who said she lied about feeling sick and when her mum took her to the doctor she turned out to have type one diabetes and extremely high blood sugar and ketones. Or say they lied sbout a stomach ache but it turned out they actually had appendicitis. I've even experienced something similar myself where I really didn't want to go to school so lied about being sick and a few hours later had an extremely high fever. Obviously I must have already been sick and that's why I didn't want to go (I liked school) but I didn't realise it yet.

But has tricked themselves into thinking they were lying about it

They likely thought they were lying as a child too
But in reality, they were telling the truth

I have memories of things of impossible things happening to me as a child, too. It was an absolute mindfuck to fully accept that those memories were fake and probably covered up actual events that were too awful for a child to process.
