Can I eat Keto after bariatric surgery? So many people who have had bariatric surgery (gastric bypass/gastric sleeve/VSG) think that it is impossible for them to enjoy all the benefits of the ketogenic way of eating. This assumption is wrong, they can and they should eat keto if after bariatric surgery!

All of the bariatric surgeries cripple the guts ability to absorb nutrients. This malabsorption is present whether you are eating the worst diet or the best keto diet. Over 200,000 people undergo this surgery each year. A KETO diet is very nutrient-dense and gives you the best chance of keeping the weight off and getting all needed nutrients

Please share this video with anyone who has had gastric bypass surgery and has gained back all or most of the weight they lost.

Had RNY in 1999. Lost 105lbs. Two years ago, I had gained back 60lbs due to inactivity thanks to a herniated disc. At that time, hubby went on keto after he had a heart attack/got 4 stents. I joined him on keto a year ago. Best decision ever. I’m down 57lbs. When I hit my goal weight (5lbs to go) it will be -62lbs. I have done 16/8 IF occasionally. I take my vitamins & minerals daily. I love keto, never had any reaction with fat intake (no gall bladder). My back no longer hurts and hubby’s cholesterol is down 200 pts. Thank you, Dr Berry, for your continued support and genuine info on the keto lifestyle.

I had VSG 4 years ago and it is the single best thing I have ever done for myself. I live a Keto lifestyle and have kept my weight off without any regain for that time. The key to success is never go back to your old way of eating.

I had gastric bypass and I lost 145lbs 3 years ago and I have Not regained. I am glad I had it. You have to keep on a diet not just start eating as you use too. It’s a life style change not an easy way out. It’s up to the person to keep up as any diet.

20 yrs later haven't gained the weight back but never lost all I needed to lose. I looked at the surgery as a tool not the solution. Keto and fasting are taking me the rest of the way. The doctor is correct I can't go more than 24 hrs fasting nor can I get all my food intake in with OMAD...when I try I stall. 18 hr fasts seem best. I don't regret the surgery it gave me my life back....then came keto and fasting which is super easy for me bc of the bypass. The bypass actually saved my life.

Gastric Bypass surgery might keep you from going 100% all-in keto, but you can definitely benefit from this way of eating.

I was 426 and got to 268 through keto. Had RNY and after the soft stages I maintained keto and have lost all my excess weight down to 148 within 12 months. Defying the program statistics. I will ALWAYS be keto. I will never go back to a traditional diet.

All my carbs come from dark leafy greens - I avoid starches.

I was keto for 6 months before I had the sleeve surgery a year ago. I’ve been keto ever since, with encouragement from my surgeon and his team. I love keto because it’s reduced my symptoms of psoriatic arthritis and fibromyalgia. For that reason, and because I want to have the best chance for long-term success with my surgery, I will remain keto forever.

I had RNY on June 5, 2019. I've had no side effects or complications so far. I was going to die if I didn't do something drastic. I had already had a stroke. I'm no longer diabetic. My A1C was only 5.6 last week. At my heaviest I weighed 317. When I started the process for surgery, I weighed 297. I'm 243 now. It hasn't even been three months yet. It was the best option for me...my situation. No regrets.

Dr Berry, I can not thank you enough for addressing my question. Since my bypass (10 years ago) I have gained 25 lbs back during my last 2 years and also went into menopause. Thank you so much! I have begun doing 16 hr fast and I eat to small meals in my window. So far so good! I am hoping to see results soon. Thank you again for listening to our concerns and answering our questions! You are the best!

Seriously, if I had known about keto prior to having the surgery, I would not have had it. I would have chosen the keto way of life.

I just had gastric sleeve surgery a month ago. In the 6 months prior to it I lost 70 pounds on Keto. Since my surgery I have lost TWO pounds. My surgeon released me this week "eat anything you want with reason" & "keep your protein up." I asked him if I could go back on Keto and he said yes "if I thought I could follow it." Well brother stand back and watch because this chick is determined. It worked before and it will work again.

Thank you! Im 13 years out after RNY gastric bypass. Had a regain after life events got Uber crazy when my adopted daughter left for collage. Your insight is spot on. I've added keto the last 6 months and I'm back within ten pounds of my original goal weight. My question/suggestion; please do a video on specific supplements for anyone 10+ years out from RNY. The only info we have is the Bariatric surgeons report, and it's already almost 5 years old! Look it up! Real eye opener. Without it I would not have avoided a transfusion for iron, but your info on calcium and iron helped me see keto and fat and real food would help more. I'm not alone, there are thousands of us struggling with what supplements to take! Help! I don't want to go back to whey protein shakes and six calcium a day. Thank you and keep doing videos! 😎

Perfect timing. I was just told by a friend that she could not do the ketogenic diet because of her bariatric surgery. I forwarded your video to her. Thank you.

I had VSG. My surgeon actually puts his patients on keto. I do keto and have no gut issues. I usually get 100-115g fat, 60-90g protein, and less than 20g carbs. I do not take supplements anymore as my lab work is better now than before surgery. I get my water in (about 100-126oz) every day. I do IF as well and just started it and already up to 17.5 hrs with goal of 20. I’ve never been healthier. My sleeve helps me stick to keto. I could not have lost the amount I have (81lbs so far and 1.5 yrs out) on keto alone and I could not have lost as much with surgery alone. They are both tools that I utilize together. I have no absorption issues (that malabsorption is usually associated with roux en y bypass) and I have no dumping. Best decision I ever made was for my surgery and to do keto as my lifestyle postop. No regrets

I had RNY 18 years ago. I've struggled here and there but I never went back up to 447#. I am not part of the 90%. It was the single best decision of my entire it saved my life.

I am not a fan of the attitude in this video. I had the duodenal switch in 2014 at the Mayo Clinic and it changed my life. I am not gaining weight but following the keto diet to support my daughter. The surgery was the single best decision I have ever made. No regrets. I know many, many people who have successfully kept the weight off after surgery. Surgery works!!! It is up to the individual to keep the weight off!!

I had lapband surgery almost 10 years ago and have lost more weight on Keto in the last 6 months than I ever did with the band. The inflammation I would experience around my band every morning is GONE! It's amazing! Before I could not even consume water until about 11 or 12 in the afternoon. Makes a big difference for sure. Hubby even wants me to have it removed to prevent that damage some people get due to erosion.
