Should You Drink Water With Your Meal or Not? – Dr.Berg

In this video, Dr. Berg answers the question if should you be drinking water when you eat food. The thought is when you drink too much water, it will dilute the hydrochloric acid in the stomach and is going to weaken the ability to digest food. The purpose of hydrochloric acid in the stomach is to trigger the enzymes to primarily help digest protein, absorb minerals, and kill off microbes.

If you are going to drink water during your meal, add apple cider vinegar to help you keep the pH where it needs to be. Avoid adding calcium carbonate or drinking alkaline water to the meal because it will dilute it. But what’s more important is what you are eating or the quality of food you are consuming, and don’t force yourself to drink a lot of water especially when you ate protein because potentially, it can also dilute the HCL and weaken the ability to break down protein.

If you are doing a salad with a meal or combining it with protein, you may find that you are thirstier at the end of the meal because a lot of the fiber attracts water and it gets up in the colon, so the body will tell you to drink a little more.

If you have a weak digestive system or your stomach isn’t that strong with a good enough acid, don’t go drink too much water, and start to build it up with betaine hydrochloride, apple cider vinegar, or apple cider vinegar pills.

For the past 2 years i drink 2 hours before and after my meal, and i have seen major improvement in my health. I rarely get sick these days, even when someone near me is sick I am not affected at all. My next step is to completely stop sugar and focus on intermittent fasting, which is quite difficult in my country with their main dish consist of rice and noodles.

In Ayurveda they suggest to drink one glass of water, one hour before your meal and one glass 1 hour after meal. During the meal you can take one or two sips of water

I was always taught: you should never drink a lot of water or a full glass of water with your meal. If you feel what you’re eating is too dry or you get thirsty, you should take a gulp of water or a sip of water to help with digesting it.

When I was drinking water with my meals, I would find myself getting indigestion consistently along with reflux. I also had a frustrating bout with acne, especially on my cheeks. It was hard for those first weeks, but once I made it a point to stop drinking anything with my meals, my indigestion largely cleared up and my acne slowly dissipated. It was a relief on both accounts. Now when I need to drink water, I typically do it at least an hour before my first bite of food or at least two hours after I’ve eaten. It’s been a helpful guideline for me.

On my current "meat only" way of eating I do not drink water 1 hour before, or until 1 hour after meal so my stomach acid does not get diluted. If I drink excess fluids ahead of time, or with my meal then I will get diarrhea within an hour afterwards. I also want to be sure that my stomach acid is strong enough to kill any pathogens that may be on, or in meat that is raw in the middle. Just like adding water to any acid, it will always be diluted. Those who eat processed foods, high vegetable, high grain/carbs may still want to include water in their meal.

Drink water about 30 min.(no more then 8oz.) Before a meal. Then dont drink water for an hour after the meal. Water is life. But if there's too much water mixed with your meal your body won't be able to absorb the nutrients as easily

If u want to drink then...Drink water 30mintues before your meal, . and after 30mintues your meal... After eating we naturally feel thirsty, .. so just take 1-2 small sips ... And never drink while eating.... That's what Indian Ayurveda say's...☺️

Thanks for the tips! I typically drink a lot of water during the day. 2/3 of my weight in ounces, but typically don’t drink much 20 min before and after the meal. Glad it doesn’t dilute the acid while eating. Thanks!

I do OMAD on the Carnivore Diet.

I’ve found that not drinking water for at least 3-6hr after my meal works best for digestion.

Because I have 1.5kg of organic, grass-fed beef for my one meal per day, I then don’t drink for 6 hours after that meal.

Then, at the 6hr post-meal mark, I’ll drink up.

Once I’m fully satisfied with my hydration, I won’t drink until this time the following day. I’ve found this works best.

Dry fasting enhances ketosis 3x faster than water fasting; it brings on ketosis in 12-24hr.

Hope this helps!

Seen big improvement with hydration and hour at least before and after meals-

Yes a few sips of water with food, but a major highlight was less heartburn or acid indigestion after meals.

In India drinking water before 40 mins of a meal and after 1.5 hrs after a meal is a traditional practice followed for thousands of years.

In my specific case I have found this advice to be bad advice.

I have IBS. And I have found that I am often dehydrated. So i started drinking enough water between meals. I peed a lot. It helped me feel better but only marginally. I kept eating without drinking with meals.

These days I often had moments when I eat something like 2-3 bytes and my IBS gets triggered right away. Things start cramping, etc..

So I saw some videos how water is super important to lubricate the stomach and intestines and also super important for the whole body to function properly... I remember in the distant past (as a teenager) i always had a drink with my meals and I didn't have IBS back then. And I thought maybe drinking with meals is OK?

So I made a new rule to drink 1 glass of water with every meal or every snack no matter what I eat. (and then drink more water between meals)

My digestion has actually improved.

So drinking with meals is a must for me now.

Eggs, I wait 20 minutes. Meat I wait an hour then chug. Dairy doesn't seem to matter as the acid almost immediately curdles it into a semi-solid.

"So basically you're just going to have to test the waters" 🤣

Don't know about USA but for places like India which are near equator like India and receives a lot of sunlight during the year Ayurveda recommends drink 30 minutes prior meal and atleast 90 minutes after meal.
