My dad was from the cash is king crowd. He’s long gone now but when we went for my first car he paid cash and got thousands off of my car. It was different in the 80’s they wanted the sale. I miss those days.

Last time I bought a car I paid cash, but didn't tell them that was the plan until I pulled out my checkbook. They looked so angry, I thought for a moment they were going to try to pull out of the deal.

My uncle lets them give him a “great deal” and right before he signs the loan he tells them he is paying cash! It helps that he makes good money dough.

When my father was alive, he would come with me and we would go all the way up to where I'd be saying I was ready to sign up for their financing. That was his cue to tell me he'd loan me the money. They had to stick with the deal they'd made. (We'd made arrangements for him to say that ahead of time - I wasn't really going to borrow from him.)

My dad paid cash for my brother's first car. He actually brought all the cash with him (5K exactly). They found a car my brother wanted priced at $6500. My dad said he was going to pay $5000 and they agreed. They tried to add fees on top, but then he showed the cash and got the car without paying a cent more.

I’m so glad that I found a good dealer. I talked them down in price by a bit and they fixed everything I pointed out (wasn’t much) for free. They didn’t know I was paying cash until the end and they were good sports about it. Never went against their word

In short, what to say is:
"I'll see what your finance guy has to offer after price negotiations"
"I don't talk finances outside of a private confidential room with someone who doesn't have the authority to sign out the car"
"please add any appropriate tax, title and license fees and give me a total."
"before any of that, I need to know the total, and then we can discuss the payment options."

I always am sure to ask the finance guy just before signing (after I've negotiated my best deal) if there are any prepayment penalties. If none, then when the first payment comes due, I go in and write a check for the full amount. Has worked for me several times.
