Dont be so in love with the vehicle that you can't walk away from it.

Your best weapon is the ability to say NO and walk away. The last time I bought a vehicle at a Honda dealership, the sales guy was "giving us the business" and coming up with excuses why they couldn't give us the price we wanted on a brand new Honda CR-V. He got up to go "speak with his manager." As soon as he left, we got up and started walking across the showroom floor and towards the door. Just as we got to the door, the sales guy came running out and stopped us. He asked, "Where are you going?" We said, "Well, you're making this too much of a hassle so we're heading over to the Toyota dealership." The guy backpedaled super quickly and we ended up walking out of the dealership with the vehicle we wanted at the price we wanted.

Why does it have to be SO complicated and stressful to buy something that costs SO much money😭

The most important thing about walking into a dealership is being willing to walk out. If a deal is only good today, tell them you will see them in a day or two. People in the U.S. allow themselves to be run over by sellers. Purchasers have the power, especially when you have good credit or cash on hand.

I would love to see both of you (with a hidden camera) negotiate & buy a car with CASH at a Stealership.

My dad bought my daughter a new car for her 16th birthday and we haggled over it for days with the dealer, they finally agreed to a huge deal under MSRP. When all the terms were settled he said I'm paying in cash, I watched their jaws drop to the floor lol. The one guy said you would have never got that deal if we knew that you were paying in cash!

Bought a car with cash. Emailed four dealer with my parameters. After all said ok. Three were jerks and I walked out. I was ready to give up and I convinced my wife let's go to the last. Glad we did. We are out in 90 minutes. The salesman had 5 ready for us to review. We test drove as long as we wanted without him. We did not see a finance guy after we settled on the OTD price. Have him a personal check. It was the best car buying experience I ever had.

damn I hate dealerships so much. It's like a den of snakes. You walk through the lobby for a recall/warranty repair and you can see them looking at you licking their lips "FRESH MEAT!"

I'm 72. I've never traded a car in, and I've never financed through a dealership. I decide on the vehicle we want, determine a fair price, then send emails to every dealership within 75 miles with the details and my offer. I usually only get a few dealers willing to talk, and if they try "talking me up, " I shut them down. I've had some lie to me via phone or email to get me on the lot, which is a deal breaker 99.9% of the time. My attitude is always, "I don't need you, (the dealership), or their vehicle because there are plenty of others down the street. Car buying is NOT my favorite thing, dealers/salespersons are NOT my friends, and I hate "finance managers!

When they asked me how I was going to pay for my new truck a few years ago, I simply replied, "with money." They guy looked at me puzzled and I said, "Why do you accept Bitcoin, old baseball cards, collectables, or comic books?" I said it light heartedly because then the guy laughed but he did not ask me again because I think he got the message.

in 2020 I was buying a truck. Sticker was 43, 000. Finally got the price to 33, 500 by letting them 'work up' 2 different loan proposals. I had the foresight to have them put the figures in writing. As they were getting ready to finalize, I then told him I'd be paying in full. He actually tried to back out the deal price. I did end up eating the 900 dollar 'destination fee' so I really ended up paying 34, 400. The KBB still has the value between 33, 800 to 35, 500

I've used the phrase "it's cash to you as I'm pre-approved by my bank". It seems to work well as they always ask if I would be willing to finance through "their bank". I say yes if you can match or beat my approved rate, let's finalize the price first and then we'll talk financing.

My wife is the ultimate negotiator when it comes to automobiles, her father used to own a used car dealer. She is a ruthless Savage, I have to walk away I can't even watch. There's no emotional involvement at all. She'll spend like 8 hours beating the crap out of them, and she's just professional enough that they don't kick her out and tell her where to go stick it. I come back hours later and these guys look like they've been through a war. At that point they will do anything just to get rid of her.

I play the "Dumb Blonde" and that works for me all the way through the negotiation process. I talk slow with few words and treat the sales person like my best friend. When the papers are turning on the table I get silent...the sales person squirms because they are taught "The first person who speaks losses!" The silence will drop the price or create a better or best deal. I send the sales person back and forth at least three times, I play dumb and slow all the way to the end. 😉👍 Oh! I should mention that I sold cars and was trained thoroughly how to sell cars.😎👍

My experience in Sept/Oct 2023 is that no matter how late in the process you say you're paying cash, all these dealers have zero shame in saying, "oh, sorry, that's no longer the price". They wont sign prior to learning how its going to be paid for.

Here is what I do: I ask about getting the lowest monthly payment which makes them think I'm financing it. Once the papers are drawn up after making the deal, I reference the early payoff section of the loan papers. If they say anything about a prepayment penalty, I use that to change my mind and pay cash. If the early payoff section of the loan papers don't impose any penalty, then I either sign the papers and pay off the loan immediately or just offer cash instead. Works. Every. Time. They don't like it, but I'm not responsible for their employment choices.

The key to everything she says is this. She is happy to walk out if they do not give her a fair deal. If the buyers attitude is "I need THIS car". Then all of the preparations are wasted. Control is lost.

When the dealership tells you that it's wise to protect your investment, be sure to respond with:
An auto purchase is never an investment. It's a big loss in depreciation the second you drive it off the lot.

Always done this. I’ve never bought a vehicle I didn’t pay in cash. The last vehicle was for my wife and after we got to the final price I got out the check book. They said nope, you must take a loan. We said no and got up and left, they let us.
