N.T. Wright is Badly Incorrect

(My personal opinion, which isn't endorsed by A&O ministries or from a medical processional, but if you feel like you need to boost your immune system against COVID-19, I think you should look into the peptide: Thymosin α1.)

The scholarship of Wright and his ability to explain it is vastly superior to that of JW. Not even close.

My struggle with Tom Wright is that I feel like I can never find anything concrete in what he says. At some point there have to be hard truths. Maybe if he would say "This is what I believe and here's why" it might be easier. I listened to him from Dallas to Louisville on a flight and I really have no idea what he believes.

James White has a PHD in misinterpreting N.T Wright

This almost borders on a caricature of N. T. Wright. Time was a popular magazine and Wright was certainly not offering a complete theology but a hopeful and pastoral word. I have read most of Wright's academic work and a good bit of his more popular level stuff. To characterize anything he writes as "depressing" is interesting in the extreme. A good bit of his writing is directed at the "problem of evil." Long before the pandemic he wrote "Evil and the Justice of God." In the pandemic he gave us "God and the Pandemic: A Christian Reflection on the Coronavirus and its Aftermath." Further, to claim that Wright does not believe in the "wrath of God" is simply absurd. But what brought on Covid IS A MYSTERY. This video is disappointing frankly.

When James talks about NT Wright lacking a “higher view”, or striking a “proper balance”, he means his own view. A bit of a misrepresentation of Wright here from James. If you want to hear Wright explaining his views go to this talk;

Nothing about Wright's position on anything is surprising or disappointing when considering the context. Wright's theology is warmed over Wesleyanism (or if you will, before the split, Wesleyan Methodist). Virtually everything he believes can be aligned point by point with John Wesley. He feigns reformation theology in his conversations and presentations, but he's not.

If the pandemic is a result of God's judgment, then was there any way it could have been prevented?

How come it's coming upon both believers, and non-believers alike?

He’s got some interviews clearing this up. He’s talking about where we are right now in the Coronavirus pandemic with no seeming end in sight. He clarified it well on Justin Brierly’s podcast.

Yes but you are missing the point of Christ’s victory on the cross and also the fact that God is very specific in his judgments and he is clear with his judgements. God’s wrath is revealed by people dying because of their sins and people having shitty lives because of their sins. He has given them over to their sins.

Is God's wrath being revealed from heaven in ways that we cannot understand? Confusing us, such that we are only left to speculate as to whether God is angry with us, even as believers, or exacting his vengeance for something we may not be aware of.
We all agree that all evil is a result of the sinfulness of this world,
But, like you rightly said, unless there is a Prophet from God, we cannot definitively say, or infer that it is God's judgment for some specific sins....

Come to think of it, if another pandemic comes up next year, what sins do we suggest God is punishing?

God is still holding the door out for people to repent and be saved....
At least till the appointed time..

That should be our emphasis, sharing the gospel, not a pandemic...

There's a lot of things we haven't figured out yet, we can't just presume, or we'll constantly live under fear of condemnation...

These things are all going to last and occur until the time God has set for judgment....

New humanity, God is making a new humanity. In Ephesians, Paul talks about one of the many purposes of the cross: to destroy the barriers that stood against us and divides us because of our sin, so that in Christ blood we are made a new creation, a new humanity. When I see this type of judgment pass from one christian to another it grieves my heart because we DO NOT understand the Kingdom of God. We reduce the message of the cross in terms of wrath and judgement but it is more than that, it is the victory of King Jesus in our place over sin, death and all kind of darkness. The victory of the crucified King and His resurrection. New creation people, NEW CREATION!

@James White. In this video on NT Wright's article, your emphasis on the need for an Old Testament-style prophet for attributions was not just thought-provoking; it was downright appalling when I first heard it. There was no need to ponder—it was an immediate red flag.

Regarding your stance on attributing the pandemic solely to God's judgment, let's talk about the elephant in the room. While it's a theological discussion for you, it's crucial to recognize the complexity of the pandemic's origins. There's a significant likelihood that the virus was developed in a Chinese lab—an act of war against America. Sure, suspicions existed three years ago, but evidence was lacking for retaliation. How, then, can you distinguish a deliberate act of harm, whether through a virus or a giant bomb dropped on a city, from an "act of God"? War, whether through bombs or bioterrorism, knows no discrimination. But you have lumped God-fearing and righteous Christians in with the evil doers of this world who died together as a result of God's wrath.

God, as demonstrated in the dialogue between Abraham and Him regarding Sodom and Gomorrah, exercises discretion. Your portrayal of God as a deity without discretion, punishing both the righteous and unrighteous alike, is nothing short of slander against God the Father. Your version of Christianity, even with your impressive credentials, isn't above reproach. It's crucial to tread carefully when presenting theological views, especially those that risk portraying God as a capricious monster.

Ok, two intelligent, diligent, and sincere christian scholars read the Bible and come to fundamentally contradictory conclusions. Who do I listen to? What chance do I have of getting it correct?

Reformed club gets really upset someone claims God’s vocation for his royal priesthood doesn’t involve rejoicing evil in the world.
If Wright made an article saying let us rejoice the evil in the world, and as God doesn’t desire redemption of creation in our present state James White would have not posted a critique lol

God no longer pours his wrath to men. Consider what was done to the early church. Paul himself stood and kept watch as Stephen was murdered. What happened to paul? He got the privillage of seeing Jesus. Wright's teaching simply does not match American evangelical doctrine. That is uncomfortable but it does not make him wrong

The article was not depressing at all. It was very realistic, but ended with a hopeful consideration. Nothing wrong with what N.T. Wright wrote. As usual, he writes what is right.

I have read most of Wright's books. He spends a lot of time caricaturing what we believe and offers a sanitized version of Christianity. It is quite simply wrong.
