Is Stretching Always the Answer to Tight Muscles?

Stretching and flexibility is a great thing. However, as I always say, it has to be done at the right time. Stretching should come into play when the tissues are functioning properly and the adhesion that causes pathology is gone. Here, I discuss the three main contributing factors to decreased flexibility and pain in your body. Pathology is just a way to say poor function and is caused by adhesion. The nerves being stuck is also caused by adhesion. Adhesion, as I say in the video, is the most under-diagnosed condition in musculoskeletal care. Adhesion causes weakness, decreased flexibility and pain. It can be broken down with expert treatment that uses the proper combination of depth and tension. Stretching, foam rolling or a lacrosse ball CANNOT accomplish this. A deep tissue massage cannot accomplish this. Trigger point therapy cannot accomplish this. I am all for massage, foam rolling and stretching in the proper place and time: Massage for relaxation, foam rolling to warm up healthy tissue and stretching only with healthy tissue (sorry, can't get behind the lacrosse ball or trigger points). Don't always default to stretching tight and painful areas. It's probably one of the three things on this list.

Dr. Matt Maggio is a soft tissue doctor, with a focus on biomechanics and non-invasive treatment of musculoskeletal injuries.
There are no “one size fits all” approaches to treating our patients. Our approach is to simply find the real problem, fix it with real treatments and give our patients the final solution so that they will have the tools to keep the pain fixed. Dr. Maggio will do this by listening, evaluating, diagnosing, treating, testing and retreating to optimize the pain relief for each patient.
A diagnosis should never be made based on the training the practitioner has, but more specifically the problem at hand. That’s why we don’t treat the site of pain – because pain is usually derived from several factors, and in most cases, is a result of diminished capacity from an altered or increased load. Over time, the body compensates by passing the load to other structures which cause a painful response to alert you that something needs to change.
Peak Performance Soft Tissue offers a non-invasive, realistic, non-surgical pain relieving results. Dr. Maggio is well trained and highly skilled in delivering top of the line results.
