Without knowing the patient's personal skin cancer risk, people can only speculate if this was necessary. Having had melanoma twice and having it removed and biopsies preformed where they had to go back and take a second chunk of skin, this isn't overkill. There has to be a certain depth of clean skin around a melanoma to insure it won't spread to other parts of the body. Taking extra skin off might quite literally save your life even if it leaves a nasty scar. My father died from not removing enough of a infected area because he didn't want to look deformed. He eventually lost his ear and then his life because he waited and the cancer spread to his bones.
