Why did the Catholic Church change the 10 Commandments?

The Catholic Church removed one of the long recognized Ten Commandments, and split another Commandment into two, so it still adds up to ten. Why did they do that? Would love your thoughts in the comment section below.

Should never tamper with the word to fit a religion to Jesus amen.

As a former devoted catholic, I used to attend the mass 5 times a week, pray the rosary daily, was a leader of a Catholic group/movement on my campus, and was visiting the seminary to become a priest!
I once was questioned, If I am to die at this moment, where would I open my eyes afterwards. Although I was a devoted catholic, I didn't have an answer, the person questioning me, opened the Bible at first John chapter 5, and as he read I was amazed. The passage actually speaks about a true believer in Jesus, whom has earned assurance of gaining eternal life in heaven, through Christ.
It also says that if that believer doesn't acknowledge this assurance - eternal life in heaven - he is explicitly implying that God is a liar!
After this encounter, I decided to study my bible daily, although I was a Catholic who reads his bible(which is very rare here in my country). After a year of studying my Bible i saw how much the Catholic church is far from the Bible.
If you are a Catholic reading this I would suggest you search the following topics:
-The authority of scripture
-Justification and salvation: this is one of the most important topics, how am I to be reconciled with God according to the Bible!? What must I do to be saved!?
-The mass and transubstantiation (Emphasis on Hebrews 10, the "lost" book in Catholicism)
-The role of saints in The Bible
-The role of virgin Mary in The Bible
-Purgatory and the Bible
-The pope :Is he biblical, is he even in the first church!?
-The first church and the history of the Catholic church, did it really start with Jesus or with Constantine centuries later!?
-The apocryphal books, why did they first show up in mid 15th century?
-Baptism, Is it for the babies??, does it have to do anything with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit!?
-The sacred mysteries and the Bible: why in a time of history they were 12 and 9 and 5 and now they stand at 7? Is the sacred mystery of confession biblical!?
"The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth." Psalms 145:18
God bless you all! MUCH LOVE!

Very good question. Jesus said to the religious leaders of his day, "Why is it you also overstep the commandment of God because of your tradition?"
Matthew 15: 3

I grew up Catholic, but even as a child, I didn't understand why it was all right for us (Catholics) to have all these statues in our churches.   I'm not sure how I knew it was wrong to create graven images, but I knew about it.  Yet here in the Catholic Church, we were surrounded by all these beautiful statues, with candles in front of them.  Everyone was clearly praying to them.  I asked my mom, and she gave me a bumbling answer that it wasn't the same thing.  But it continued to bother me.  When I grew up, and got saved at age 25, I still didn't understand why it was fine for Catholics to have all these statues and carvings.  Imagine my shock when I was reading my Bible and discovered that the Catholic church had CHANGED the Ten Commandments!  I grew up with the 2 forms of "covet", but somehow I knew about the graven image part.  I saw Protestants referring to only the one "covet" which seemed much more efficient to me, and that's when finally I went into Exodus and found the true Ten Commandments as God had written them.  What audacity!  To change the Living Word of God in order to cover their own sinful desires.  And no shame at all in what they've done.

They took out the one that says: [Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments] To accommodate mary worship

This article may shed some light on this, but I will do more searching.

Question: "What are the Catholic Ten Commandments?"

Answer: The biblical Ten Commandments, found in Exodus 20:1–17 and Deuteronomy 5:6–21, are listed as follows:

(1) “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:2–3; Deuteronomy 5:6–7).

(2) “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments” (Exodus 20:4–6; Deuteronomy 5:8–10).

(3) “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain” (Exodus 20:7; Deuteronomy 5:11).

(4) “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy” (Exodus 20:8–11; Deuteronomy 5:12–15).

(5) “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16).

(6) “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13; Deuteronomy 5:17).

(7) “You shall not commit adultery” (Exodus 20:14; Deuteronomy 5:18).

(8) “You shall not steal” (Exodus 20:15; Deuteronomy 5:19).

(9) “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor” (Exodus 20:16; Deuteronomy 5:20).

(10) “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s” (Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21).

However, in the Catholic Catechism and most official Catholic documents (see the official Vatican website), the first and second commandments are combined to read, “I am the Lord your God. You shall not have other gods beside me.” To get the number of commandments back to ten, the tenth commandment is then split into “you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife” and “you shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.”

It is not necessarily wrong for the Catholic Church to combine the first and second commandments and split the tenth commandment into two commandments. After all, the numerals 1—10 do not appear in any ancient Hebrew manuscripts that contain the Ten Commandments to officially settle how the commandments should be divided. Technically, the second commandment contains two commandments: “you shall not make for yourself a carved image” and “you shall not bow down to them or serve them.” Further, the tenth commandment contains seven different, but related, prohibitions.

It is suspect, though, that the Catholic Church would summarize the second commandment as “you shall not have other gods beside me” and leave out “you shall not make for yourself a carved image” and “you shall not bow down to them or serve them, ” considering that the Catholic Church has long been accused of idolatry for its use of images and iconography in worship.

Due to the importance of the first two commandments, and in light of the fact that the ancient Israelites greatly struggled with idolatry, maintaining the clear and explicit condemnation of graven images seems to be the biblically prudent choice. The Catholic Church leaves out part of the second commandment, apparently trying to hide the fact that their own images and icons are violations of that very command.

The 1st Commandment for the Catholic Church is: "I am the Lord your God, you shall have no other gods before me, you shall not make for yourself a graven image to worship them." So it's false when you say they dropped the protestant 2nd commandment. The protestant 1st and 2nd commandment is just the 1st commandment which means not having any other gods and not making images to worship them, like the Hebrews did after God rescued them from Egypt. The thumbnail you have is just a summary just as the protestant one is a summary, the full commandment is in Exodus

Well, I guess one can't stand for anything that's against all the sacred graven images and statues and paintings in, on and around your Temples, Cathedrals and all your other graven images. Those things are expensive! A commandment like that simply wouldn't do. Better have the pope who they call "the holy father" decree it out of the way.

I grew up in the catholic faith. I went to a catholic school from kindergarten through the eight grade. I was and alter boy and sang in the chior. When I was in school the class would kneel down before statues of people and pray to them. When I was serving as an alter boy, I witnessed a lot of people praying to statues of a lot of different people. I can tell you that that is idol worship. Anyone you pray to except the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is idol worship. The Catholic Church make statues of so many people, and their congregation and followers bow down to graven images violating the second commandment of God. If you are a Catholic and your reading my post, please consider what you are doing. Read the Bible for yourself and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you the truth. Then ask God to reveal to you any sin that is in your life so you can repent. Do what I did many years ago because God opened my eyes. Thank you for reading this.

It's because Catholics revere tradition over the word of God and their tradition is to teach the Ten Commandments as they appear in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

They also changed the 4th Sabbath commandment from 7th Day to 1st day in 321 ad under Constantine. Jesus prophesied through Daniel in chapter 7 verse 25 that this little horn would think to change times and laws. Papacy is the little horn that comes from the pagan Roman beast.:.same beast as Revelation 13 and the harlot that sits on the beast.

They split the other commandment into 2 because they removed the the 2nd commandment which is #2. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything.... This is so that they can continue worshipping statues and other relics

Matthew 7:22 says "Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’" The key word here is Many. Not a few, not some not half. MANY will say did we not cast out demons and perform miracles. These people Jesus was talking about were claiming to be Christian in their life. So much so that they were performing miracles and exorcisms. And there will be LOTS of them. Jesus said MANY. If you are in the catholic church. Get out as fast as you can. I'm not saying catholics cant be saved. But if a catholic is saved, its is in spite of the catholic church, not because of it.

My problem with this line of reasoning from the Catholic Church is that it is deceptive at best. Explain to me how the Jews for hundreds of years were very aware and acknowledged 10 commandments in the form that have no idols or graven images as the 2nd commandment. Yet, the Catholic Church comes along and just changes it and doesn’t feel like it owes an explanation to anyone. I have honestly been seeking answers for this and can’t find any other than one similar to this guy that made the video. Other arguments have been “because we said so” types. I’m sorry, that’s not good enough when the Bible clearly listed them in exodus and the Jews carried them for thousands of years as the Protestants claim them to be. Im truly curious…im looking for truth

I'm surprised somebody as knowledgeable as Ray Comfort would post something as ridiculous as this.

The commandments are listed in Exodus 20. They are not numbered. The Catholic Church created an abbreviated version, numbered 1 to 10, to make it easy for ordinary people to memorize them. Most people were illiterate in those days so they learned their faith by memorizing.

This version of the commandments remained for several centuries until the Protestant reformers decided to change them. They split the first commandment into two, and merged 9 and 10.

So it was the Protestants who changed the commandments.

It's obvious that the RCC doesn't want their people to know that statues are hated by the Creator because they worship them instead of Him.

Ray: the division of Exodus 20:1–17 and  Deuteronomy 5:4 into 10 commandments used by the Catholic Church was proposed by Augustine in the 5th century AD. The same division was later used by Martin Luther. Question to answer from history: who and when proposed the version of 10 Commandments that you use?

I’ve heard a catholic say they almost can’t get their fill of Icons. It’s sad really we ought to pray for a hunger and thirst for the word of God. Seeking His righteousness, the presence of His Holy Spirit. Not preying at the feet of images begging their meritorious intervention. Very sad

Not only do they make graven images, but they kneel in front of them.
