Do Catholics Worship Idols?

Much is said about the way Catholics adorn their churches with images, and many believe that it is an act of idolatry. Do Catholics worship false gods? What can we say about images and statues in worship?

A protestant asked me if I'm Catholic or Christian. I was like, "What?"

As an Orthodox Christian I really like your answers as I get questions about icons in my church.

i grew up in a protestant very anti catholic family. my grandma always told to never go to a catholic church and that they worship Mary instead of Jesus. As I watched your videos I really wanted to convert so I went to a catholic mass and it was the most beautiful thing ever. I felt Gods presence like i never felt it in any protestant mass. I was surprised that the mass was all about Jesus since I thought they would pray to Mary. But not even once did they mention her. It was all about God. Thats when I knew Im gonna be catholic ❤

I used to be a protestant and this always confused me. My parents used to spew the rhetoric that Catholics worship saints as gods. This helped a lot, as a person who is trying to figure out what I believe I try to be as understanding as possible of all belief systems.

Only the Catholic church taught me to be humble and not hate anyone. The true resemblance of Christ himself.

Luke 17:20 "Heaven is in our midst", therefore duplicating those heavenly images and statues in the Catholic Church acknowledges that belief. If you were in Heaven and you ask an angel next to you to pray for you that is not idolatry, that is exhibiting community and unity under God. On the other hand if you ignore the angels around you and talk directly to God as if you are above them that is arrogance.

I loved this explanation! As a catholic I have found myself having to explain this to many and I have always struggled to explain it this is a huge help to put the faith and word into the explanation without having to struggle! Thank you father!

A wonderful, sincere and practical explanation. I've not had the opportunity to enter many Catholic Churches in my time, but the few times I have they have been reverentially serene.

A lot of Protestant and Evangelical Churches are very "buzzy" - so energetic and a bit like jumping into a concert. For me Catholic churches have filled me with awe, peace and contemplative homeliness.

When I look at a statue of St. PETER, I recall his faith struggles. I remember he was the bravest in "proclaiming" he would never leave and would rather die for Jesus. But he ended up denying Jesus not once, not twice but three times. Unlike Judas, however, Peter regretted and kept following Jesus from afar. When Jesus gazed on him before He was to be tortured and crucified, Peter knew it was a gaze of divine mercy. Thus, in return, Peter humbly said "Yes" to Jesus' question if he loved Him. Not once. Not twice. But three times also. And thus Jesus confirmed Peter as the sheperd, His first Prime Minister on earth after He ascended to heaven to reaffirmed Peter's status as the Rock upon which Jesus would build His Church (Mat 16:18).

Yes...when I look at his statue, I recall Peter's faith and strugles. In the end, I remember a great saint who finally gave his life up in the name of Jesus his God, being crucified also; but upside down because he thought he was not worthy to be crucified the same way his Lord was crucified.

As a soon-to-be-Catholic artist, this video spoke deeply to me and assuaged my concerns about creating works of art. Thank you!

Folks notice at 6:55 that Father Casey's voice even changes and becomes even more loving and caring to stress the importance and understanding of what the Eucharist IS. Thanks my brother Father Casey always such good work.

You hit the nail right on the head! I'm a Baptist who married a Catholic. I love going to both churches and seeing God's family worship Him just in different ways.

The beauty of the Catholic service is you don't have to know the language being used to follow along. The imagery tell the story as strongly as words. Every move is part of the story of the history of Christ. The Saints are examples we should strive to be like. My particular favorite is ST. Jose Sanchez del Rio. A child who was horribly tortured and could have ended the torture by renouncing Christ and didn't. It was during the Christeros war in Mexico.
