Whether you're training in the martial arts for sport or self-defense, learning how to take a punch is a crucial skill. Here's an important tip to survive on the mats and off!

SUMMARY:
The basics of taking a punch are pretty simple: Keep your mouth shut, tuck your chin, and roll with the punch.

But what do you do when you can’t roll? What can you do when you get rocked?

Here are two training tips that might help.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a medical professional. Take my advice and practice at your own risk.

Tip #1: When you get hit, focus before you quit.

Time will not stop for you. A bad guy will not stop for you. When you get rocked, you must get your focus back right away. It doesn't matter what you do, but when you take a hit, train yourself to move through the moment, instead of trying to stop it.

No, I’m not telling you to ignore your pain, I’m telling you to control it. When you get rocked, take a breath, protect yourself, and focus.

Tip #2: Give yourself a "trigger word".

Security dogs are trained to attack when they hear a secret code word. You can do the same thing!

Don't get lost in a fog of pain and panic. Clear the clouds as fast as possible by repeating a trigger word in your head.

Maybe you say GO or FIGHT. It doesn't matter. Just pick a word that fires you up. Don't let the voices in your head turn on you!

This is the big lesson on how to take a punch: You can’t control the fight if you can’t control your mind. So, give your mind something to focus on.

Of course, there’s a life lesson here. We all take hits every day. Each hit you take is a chance to strengthen your fighting spirit. No matter what happens out there, when you take a hit, take a breath, make a decision, and follow through.

That’s not just the secret to winning a fight, it’s the secret to winning at life.

This is like the "It's not about how hard you can hit, but how much you can get hit and still keep moving foward" Rocky Balboa line, but elaborated to a whole new level. This was a great video, very useful, specially the mantra part. I once broke my arm near the wrist while in high school, first ever time I broke a bone, it was awfully painful but I was able to walk normally holding my arm with the wrist all crooked, smiling through the pain saying "I'm fine" while my friends were all "oh shit" and I waited for the ambulance, I like to think that because of that I found out that I'm not a quitter, but we can never know for sure, and honestly that was physical pain, emotional pain can be a whole new story, at the moment of writing this I'm fairly young and I haven't lost anyone dear to me, but the moment will come soon or later most likely for my grandma, I'll be sure to cheer the current moments we can have, and when the time eventually comes the things I learned from this will certainly be helpful to keep going, I wouldn't be who I am if it wasn't for her.
