A left hook is definitely an amazing answer to another left hook but honestly in my opinion a right straight is just the best punch to respond with because it’s always going to reach first on the inside and can allow you to keep you head away from the hook via using your shoulder as cover

You can throw a long hooks with your thumb down as well. I do that at long range to throw people off if they're getting used to my jab and cross. All that matters is that your pointer and middle finger knuckles land and your wrist is stable enough so that it isn't injured on impact.

The hook that Tate threw first is called “Turning it over”. That’s a correct hook, the inside hook. When we heard Manny Stewart, Herman Carter, Angelo Dundee, The Duvas screaming to “Turn it over, Kid!” Or to shorten that up! That’s what that meant. That hook is physics. That hook brings your whole body with it and it’ll turn out the lights! The 2nd hook is the wide hook. Tommy Morrison, Boom Boom Mancini, and the great banger Pepino Cuevas specialized in those. I’m far from calling myself a pro, but I’ve been doing kickboxing for over 10 years now. This type of counter is called a “catch and counter”. This means that you saw through your opponents combination. It allows for a perfectly timed counter. The catch here is that a good boxer, won’t give an opportunity to let his combinations get countered, either by good distancing or (head)movement.
