Absolutely they know what they are doing, my ex apologised for his vile behaviour towards me, he knew he had treated me badly. but he didn’t really care, he tried to make me think he did care because he wanted me back, but his behaviour didn’t change so he lost me, and therein lies the difference between a narcissist and a normal person.

There is no doubt in my mind, they don't know what they are doing is wrong. They just don't care. Later when you two are alone is when their ugliness come out. They want you to praises them. Why? They can't or won't except their wrong doings, or bad behaviors. Quick to point out your smallest flaws. Nothing to compare to theirs. Their pleasure is to make you look small compared to them, so they can have control over you. Don't give it to them. Bust their bubble by putting them in their place. That should shut them up. Showing them you are no pushover and less important than them.
