Fruit is high in sugar and isn’t really so healthy.

Someone asked me, if sugar is so bad then why is fruit so healthy?

First of all, I never said that fruit was so healthy, okay? It’s not part of a healthy keto plan. That being said, let me explain.

The fruits we consume now are hybrids, and over the years they’ve been bred to become sweeter and sweeter. Honey crisp apples, for example, have 19 grams of sugar. Take a look at a crabapple; it doesn’t have 19 grams of sugar.

Fruits should be seasonal. If you’re consuming them all year, that’s not really natural. Some people don’t differentiate between whole fruit and fruit juice. But fruit juice is without fiber and nutrients because it’s pasteurized. It’s heated, which kills a lot of the enzymes and heat-sensitive vitamins. Juice is basically pure sugar as compared with whole fruit which has vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and fiber.

The fruit has nutrients that are protective against DNA damage and diseases like diabetes. However, it also has a great amount of sugar called fructose. Fructose doesn’t go to all the cells in the body like glucose does. It all goes to your liver. This means it doesn’t spike your blood glucose as much as sugar.

You might think this is good, but the point is that your liver has to deal with all of the fructose you eat. If you eat too much, it could lead to insulin resistance, which will raise your insulin.
If there’s too much fructose for your liver to handle, it will convert it to fat, cholesterol, and triglycerides. Because of the high percentage of people who have problems with blood sugar and prediabetes, I recommend you stick with a small amount of berries, not fruit.

Diabetes is a disease of high blood sugar, so why would you want to consume fruit and add more sugar to your diet?

Refined sugar should be classed as a drug.

I remember as a child eating fruit in season. Watermelon, plums, and picking wild raspberries. My dad would splurge once a year on a pineapple. Of course, apples, oranges, and bananas were cheaply, mass marketed, so we got plenty of those. But we really looked forward to the seasonal fruits.

So we just need to do the basic
- Eat fruit in the season ✔
- Don't eat everything too much, including fruit ✔
- Do exercise ✔

For the first time I've understood the difference between glucose and fructose. There is quite a lot to learn. Thanks, Dr Berg!

Fruit is incredibly good for you in Moderation, it’s just not Keto-friendly.

Alot of fruits are low glycemic loads. Like strawberries or even oranges. I avoided eating them for years because I equated fruits with sugar, and I think it was a mistake. Fruits are a good source of fiber, vitamins, and flavanoids, and they are mostly water, not sugar.

In nature fruit is supposed to be natural, but nowadays sometimes they are available all the time. Not to mention making them seedless as well

I've always thought the differences were just the minerals, vitamins and fibre, but it is more than that. Thanks Dr.Berg.

Thank you Dr. Berg for the helpful information. I quit veganism and I’m learning so much from your channel. Also, you reflect good health, other (plant based) doctors don’t look the part.

Thank you so much for this. A so called nutritionist I know told groups of us that fruit is great! Eat as much as you want. When I told her I didn’t like how fruit made me feel she said it was in my head🙄 I never followed her advice and I’m much better for it

Thank you. Fruits have always been a puzzle to me. So many years hearing that they are good and healthy. Such a revolution in my world being from Brazil that fruits are everything. But indeed things are different. My dad used to throw the seeds of the fruits he had in the garden and they used to grow. Nowadays he throws and nothing grows anymore. Everything is dead already when we buy. Only the nusty sugar never dies. Lol

A huge Thank You Dr. Berg for explaining this out. I was a vegetarian for practically all my life. I thought i was missing out not eating the fruits anymore. This video has cleared up some questions. ♥️

good points, but when you say eatting to much fruit is not "natural" in accordance with seasons - thats not true for much of the human population who live in the tropics. I think it would make more sense to just say its unhealthy rather than unnatural

We grow heirloom (non hybrid) black berries, raspberries and apples. All are pretty tart! We enjoy them in moderation.

THIS IS ALSO TRUE ABOUT MEAT. HORMONES AND ANTIBIOTICS ARE GIVEN TO ANIMALS, SO THEY PRODUCE MORE MILK, EGGS AND MEAT.

Fruits in Jamaica are seasonal, so when the season is over we see them no more until the next year. I plant my own fruit trees so that I don't buy puss in bags.

Many years ago, I was re-taught something about fruit from someone who went to "the islands" for ozone diabetes care. They told her to think differently and to consider mature plant seed pods with the seeds on the inside to be fruits.. it opens up a world of allowed fruits - like avocados, cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini etc
Berries would be a different classification.. seeds on the outside (blueberries are weird here)
