1976 TR6 project - Part 3 - Reinforcing Diff Mounts

While the engine is out and we are waiting for parts and dealing with machine shops, let's do some other projects on the car. One of the things we wanted to do just preventively was diff mounts reinforcement. Little did we know that we already had a problem there.

Where there is a will there is a way. Nice work!

Nice work...take a look at a wheeled transmission jack. They are designed to fit and refit heavy automatic transmissions when the vehicle is up on a lift. Also take a look at an underhoist tripod stand. They are used to prevent the vehicle tipping or rocking on a 2 post lift especially when you remove a heavy object such as a differential or gearbox from one end or the vehicle. This upsets the balance and the vehicle can tip and maybe slide off the lift.

Hi Elin. Great work. I know the difficulty in welding in very confined spaces but it looks strong even though it resembles pigeon poop.
By the way I started the Healy yesterday,

You could buy a gearbox stand for taking out gearboxes and use for differentials when on the lift

You handled that repair like a stud! Nice work!

Like someone else mentioned a welding course is worth it's weight in gold and yt has a bunch of free ones. Once you get good with a TIG you wonder why you hadn't used one sooner.

.... watching the upper cross member move....maybe box and insert stop tubing at each stud....the whole back end will be happier....

Elin, please please invest in doing a welding course !!

Good systematic improvements, but I'd prefer to see everything cleaned up and Zinc primered before any underseal / bed liner is put on top !

Do you need to make a mark to match the splines when you separate them to reunite them at the same alignment?

You could do with a transmission jack.

I’m surprised you don’t recommend first to treat the the surface rust then use the bed liner.

Rusty will be pissed that you used his dish to drain the diff oil!

How can there be only one universal joint? Normally on a prop shaft three is two, and the middle part will turn faster and slower two times on a revolution, because of the geometry of a universal joint, but nr2 eliminate the uneven rotation. But if you have only one there will be vibration, hence new cars use constant velocity joints (CV-joints) no surprise the splines gets worn.

Lots of people seem to know what you should do. I would like to say to those people: why don't you do those things yourself? Welding above your head, in upwards direction, in a confined space, is very very difficult indeed. I would like to see people improve on your skills! As for dismounting/mounting the diff: I used a specially build wooden crate and my jack (chassis was on stands at the time); the crate had a 'steering' attachment, to keep balance and direction, and it worked quite well.

Not an easy repair even with the lift.

If you fix too many leaks I won't have a true British self oiling car!

Good welding skills are important, but I'm not going there. Box in the frame, add tubes, zinc prime, bla bla bla. Why don't they all come too and help you . Pull the body, box the frame, zinc every thing, spend lots of time and some else's money. What you do you seem to do very well. Let the critics come show you how. Talk is cheep. Your info has helped me a lot on my GT6..
