Activities which strengthen the muscles - like weightlifting - should be part of an older person's weekly exercise routine, a study suggests.

People doing both aerobic and muscle exercises were more likely to live longer than those who did just one or the other, US researchers found.

But you don't have to go to the gym - carrying heavy shopping bags, digging in the garden and pilates all count.

Turning 74 in January, started lifting in 1969, and am still at it pretty well daily 1 hour to 1 hour and 20 minutes daily. I start every day with half an hour of yoga then on to the weights. I have 18 hours fasted daily for the last few years and eat a low carb high protein diet. I feel great and am often thought to be a man in my 50s who looks extremely good.

That's great because I'm starting an exercise program in my mental health housing, I ordered a pull up bar, and a 35 pound weight I can barely lift

I agree that daily exercise is definitely good for one. Each to their own but personally I found that weights training was good for me up until about the age of thirty. Now I have a two hourly Tai Chi day instead, and I have never yet suffered any injuries because of it. It's low impact body magic, I tell you true :)
