What Does NPD Feel Like?

Often when we think of what it feels like to have NPD we're thinking about it from an outside perspective. We may think someone with NPD is an evil creature that gets excited about hurting other people. But that's not what NPD is like.

Someone with NPD has low self-esteem. So they're always feeling like they have to protect themselves and appear better than people around them. Because of that someone with NPD may have a hard time expressing emotions other than when rage and frustration come out.

im 19 and i got diagnosed with npd this morning and the past 12 hours were me desperately trying to reconcile everything I know about people with npd (narcissistic, confident, abusive) with what i know about myself. i always thought i was kind and empathetic, and someone who's very aware of what others are feeling so to be told im a terrible uncaring person who's prone to violence and abuse by every source i found was... jarring to say the least, especially since all of them talked about people with npd like they were, idk, clinical cases?? a different species??? instead of just.... people. thank you for being the only person who explained npd well and with kindness, i now recognise that the former type behaviours very much do apply to me (while all the latter ones describe my father perfectly). and thank you for going against the stigmas people have, this whole video was super helpful both in providing information and in helping me accept myself. have a wonderful day!

Fear, emptiness, lack, depression, apathy, rage, surges of happiness when things are going well, vulnerability, loneliness, disconnection.

I'm diagnosed with NPD and this is a nice video compared to the other ones that talk about us as if we're parasites. Thanks dude for actually understanding

“Something bad is gonna happen if I don’t stop it.” Such a helpful way to describe it. I always knew that narcissists were not the monsters they’ve been painted as, but I didn’t understand that they experienced such a deep feeling of vulnerability. Thanku.

As someone with (Vulnerable) NPD, I thank you for making us not seem like monsters. I'm a teenager and I've been called evil before, so I appreciate it :)

Great vid. People forget that npd is a disorder and the very basic requirement for something to be a disorder is that it has to impact the persons life negatively. It's an incredibly frustrating disorder to have, and narcissistic collapses are like depressive episodes on steroids.

thanks for this video! i like it when someone sees stigmatized mental disorders in a different perspective (one that doesn't focus on only the aspects that are considered harmful to OTHER people rather than to those who have the disorder), but it pisses me off that such a small amount of people even bother trying.
for the record, i'm still not sure whether i have NPD or not, and i'm not going to self diagnose either, i just know that i relate a lot to the struggles lmao

I remember myself started laughing the moment my therapist let me see that I may have narcissism. It seemed impossible. Like wait, I’m pissed off, weak and auto aggressive, are you kidding?! And then left alone I started searching for some info and got the same reaction several times. God damn it, I was laughing and at the same time feeling more and more clearly that yes, I do.

I get tired of hearing people with npd villainized like actual monsters because they are still humans, with lots qualities and feelings, etc. So I appreciate you taking the time to explain some of those aspects with like grace and understanding and less judgment than most people describe people w npd. This is the first vid I’ve seen of yours. I appreciated it. Thanks. :)

2 weeks ago in one of the MENTAL HEALTH groups I am in on FB they were saying how all narcissists are horrible people and I wrote they not all of them are but even after I wrote that people still said that people with NPD have no feelings for people and don't care about people and that makes them be horrible towards people, then I wrote "but just because people don't feel anything towards people doesn't mean people are going to be horrible towards people" . This was MENTALLY ILL PEOPLE thinking A mental illness doesn't make someone a bad person.... people are bad people because they are bad people!!!!

I think folks who have had run-ins with malignant narcissists/dark triads, are especially messed up and less likely to humanize narcissists. It seems not all people with NPD are malignant. Regardless, thanks for the video and the insight. It’s good to humanize these sufferers. It’s hard to have empathy sometimes when you’ve been manipulated and hurt.

Thank you.
I love my husband. I feel his emotions. I've tried to, , , , ummm, like, , , to let it pass, or, , maybe I just love him Soo much, that I want him to be happy.
But he keeps damaging himself.
I really do understand where you're coming from.
But that wall. Like a brick wall. I've realized I can't Love this out of him. I really wish I could. Now I'm becoming damaged. I hope he will see himself for what a beautiful person he is!!!
I'm more frightened for him, than me. Only because of what he doesn't want to see in himself, and take that step to be vulnerable.
I hope this helps anyone.

tysm for this video, i teeter between grandiose and vulnerable a lot and thanks for not totally demonizing the grandiose side of things, even though it can have consequences on others and that’s terrible it stems from internal pain

I love the points you made in this! There a lot of misunderstandings surrounding narcissistic people, deep diving and understanding it takes a lot of time and understanding. Also i believe narcissism is a spectrum, and we all have some traits of it that can present itself from time to time because we all have an EGO. Some narcissist are not even aware they are hurting people, some when they do realize it the feel shame, and the really disturbed ones actually enjoy hurting people, those are more rare I think
