Can a person literally die of loneliness? Is there a connection between the ability to express emotions and Alzheimer’s disease? Is there such a thing as a “cancer personality”? Drawing on scientific research and the author’s decades of experience as a practicing physician, Dr Gabor Maté joined How To Academy to explore the role that stress and emotions play in an array of common diseases, including arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and multiple sclerosis.

In this talk, Dr. Maté shared his insights into how disease can be the body’s way of saying ‘no’ to that which the mind cannot or will not acknowledge. He weaves together scientific research, case histories, and his own insights and experience to present a broad perspective to enlighten and empower individuals to promote their own healing and that of those around them.

I find it amazing that we can hear such brilliant people talk virtually free from the comfort of our home.

Once in a while an exceptionally gifted human being appears and shines light on the crevices of humanity that others had deepened and darkened. Dr. Maté is one of those rare gems. 🙏

I believe when I went into a coma in 1968 it was due to shock. At the time I was taken to a hospital and many tests were done. My doctors decided I might have a tumor on my pancreas. After surgery I went into a deeper coma and my husband was told to come back to the hospital. At the end of December of 1968 my doctor spoke with a doctor from Billings hospital in Chicago. Shortly after this I was admitted to Billings hospital. They did many tests and decided I should be in the research dept. of this hospital. I was there for six months.

There's a reason I'm writing this.
I truthfully know (as well as I can know), that the coma and everything there after, was due to the stress I was living under. I'm 84 now and I'm taking hydrocortisone. I've had three crisis's but other than that I feel pretty good.

Thank you very much for reading this.

All I’ve learned by being nice is, it leads you to people who will only use you and abuse you, whether it is physically, emotionally, psychologically, or financially. 🙏🙏🙏

I'm so grateful we have people like Gabor Maté who highlight the mind-body connection. 🙏 Healing and awareness to all of you!

I can’t stop listening to his lectures! They are profound truths we all need to be aware of as people and as healers! Yes, he expresses the gaps in western medicine, being dualistic and not holistic! I am glad and happy to have seen and felt this gaps in my training and practice as a doctor and found holistic medicine particularly in Functional medicine. Dr Gabor affirmed our Mind body spirit and social nature of our beings !
🧡🙏Thank you Dr Gabor! What a genius, wise, and caring human being you are.

Your body is like a recorder and records everything that happens to you in your life. I learned this in primal/ gestalt therapy. When I had a painful area in my body my therapist would have me feel into the pain and "research" the origins....almost always it was a memory recorded from childhood trauma. Like an invisable bruise, once you investigate your body's messages( pains and discomforts) you will one by one heal your wounds and learn to love yourself. As a child i was molested by close family members and beaten severely being blamed for the assaults. Fortunately, I was trained professionally in music and dance which aided my enduring these "parents" until I was 18 and legally able to run away from this crazy household. They were never protective or parents as the social media has brainwashed the world to believe...' everyone has a loving mom and dad, granddad etc.' I was the eldest and did have the advantage of one set of grandparents that loved and paid for that music and dance education which allowed me to channel the pain and anger I was going thru, at least partially. Lucky, because I had other adults that were teachers and took an interest in my well being. I was an over achiever because beatings were the price for not getting straight A's. Never allowed back into this family unit again after I exposed them and asked for help I have lived like an orphan most of my life. The family has never changed from holding me at fault as John Bradshaw stated every family has a scapegoat and apparently that has been my role for most of my life. Leave bad environments and seek out what is good for your love and self excceptance. Environment is everything! never did I tell my friends of my education, it was too high brow ..and the man i almost married i told of my childhood and he called me damaged goods. So much for that. Professionally trained artists are pushed and under so much pressure to be perfect. Many give it up when they move away from those that expect them to be so much. They also have attachment disorders due to lack of human contact and love. We are human and more than performers, we were born to be more! eg

I love Dr. Mate!! When he tripped he just made me feel normal. So many people get embarrased and retreat when we do something "human" like tripping in public!!!! He is a very genuine intellegent man and he just showed without trying that it is ok to be HUMAN and not feel embarrased by it!! Love you Dr. Mate!!

Thanks to people like Gabor, Lissa Rankin, Bruce Lipton and John Sarno, I'm now a converted mind/body health advocate. I'm at the stage where, when I deal with any health ailment, the first thing I look to is my emotional state and history.

I have serious digestive issues that cause me to be in pain almost daily.
Only one gastroenterologist asked me about stresses and traumas in my life.I thought he was being annoying and left him for another gastroenterologist. This one loves prescribing tons of PPI s that don't work.I have had enough when i was diagnosed with barrett's .I'm going to be seeing the guy that asked my about my life.I wished I never left him.
