Stress, Anxiety, and Worry: Anxiety Skills #2

What's the difference between stress, anxiety, and worry? And why does it matter? If we want to resolve our stress and anxiety, we need to know the difference and change how we respond to each form of anxiety. We often use the terms stress and anxiety interchangeably, but when we are lazy with our speech, it makes it harder to learn specific skills to resolve, treat, or cope with anxiety disorders.

About Me:
I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.

In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.

Stress still allows for reason ...Anxiety is a based on a untargeted feeling and unfocused... Stress is rooted to an awareness of danger or risk but anxiety is based on the inability to focus and confusion .... Stress demands a recognition/identification of dangers risk... Anxiety requires organizing the world to find underlining dangers and risk and creating a general environment to resolving and adapting challenges and concerns. so the therapist needs to know the sociological psychological and economic environment of the patient/subject to help them .with stress this is easier to resolve .. With anxiety and the confusion that has overwhelmed the mind - people who know the patient /subject well enough to help devise a way to identify and organize for the subject is more important ... support from family and close friends can useful ... addressing anxiety is more difficult alone - diet and mediation and other general measures might be better for Anxiety while stress might be addressed using CBT

thank you, this is extremely helpful. I have struggled with anxiety and depression for many years but no one has ever explained the different parts of anxiety and how to treat them separately.

Thank you for making this video. Some of my classmates say they have anxiety, but they were never diagnosed. Sure they may be stressed or worried, but most of the time they don’t care about their work. It drives me mad because I know there are people who actually have anxiety, but they get pushed to the side.

I have a telephone consultation with my GP tomorrow After the last few months of unusual behaviour from myself even before covid19. I think I might have general anxiety due to work stress. Things that’s happened: I’ve had a panic attack at work embarrassing myself because I wouldn’t cope, I called in sick the next day from work as I was awake all night with stomach pain but all work did was bug me all day with phone calls which made me break down in tears while I was at a supermarket which is where I was when receiving the calls because I needed to get out of my house. I have issues sleeping but this has become better recently because I falling a sleep listening to audiobook. Also working from home recently has taken out a lot of work stress. Although today I just simply left my house to fill up my car with petrol then return home and I found that I could feel myself shaking but I wasn’t physically shaking. I do worry about when I do return to work to the office if my stress will return. #advice update: I’ve been diagnosed with Anxiety

I've watched several of your videos now. Thank you for putting these out there. Mental Health is under focused on... can't find right word. Everyone should learn these basic things about our brain.. and that we're learning more and more about them all the time. HAHA... I grew up when everything was right/left brained.
