6 Things They DON’T Tell You About Medical School

You’ve heard it all - medical school makes it impossible to have a life, it’s like drinking from a fire hydrant, and you’ll only ever find happiness at the end of the tunnel. But what if I told you much of what you’ve heard about medical school is completely wrong?

The stereotype of medical school is that you won’t know much of a life beyond studying and burying your nose in textbooks or notes. You might be surprised to hear it’s possible to have more of a life than you think.

It's going to be stressful, no matter how zen you may be before orientation. You'll need to figure out what techniques best serve you when tensions rise.

Premeds often mistake medical school’s difficulty with its volume. Make no mistake, medical school is certainly challenging, but it’s not because of the conceptual difficulty of the material.

Most students don’t employ active learning techniques. The problem is that passive techniques are far less effective if you’re interested in learning the most amount of information in the least amount of time and getting back to living your life.

In college, you’re often juggling multiple assignments across your classes throughout the semester, in addition to quizzes and midterms before your finals. But medical school has fewer assignments and fewer quizzes, thus requiring more self-directed learning to keep on track.

Medical school is a far more intimate affair than college. While you can disappear in the crowds of college, you can’t do the same in medical school. You’ll know every classmate by name, and vice versa, so make sure to protect your reputation.

The overwhelming majority of college students arrived straight from high school, but your classmates in medical school will be from all walks of life. You’ll be humbled by the exceptional individuals you’ll have the honor of calling your colleagues. It's an adjustment for everyone, but don’t forget these 6 underappreciated realities!

My first day of medical school 43 years ago, the internal medicine professor advised us that half of what we were going to learn was BS. The problem was that we don’t know what half it is.

I'm still in my 1st year, and in the 1st semester I struggled a lot trying to adapt to the changes and differences in studying and learning methods. It was really a big shock moving from school to med school..Also having social anxiety and being introverted, I find it hard to study and wrap my head around anything under stress and nervousness, experienced a shameful fall in grades 1st semester leading me to depression. I'm happy to be where I am now, but I'm desperate to learn how to keep up on my studies and organise my daily time and get the best of it. And I found this channel! Thank you for the advice! I'll definitely check other videos of the channel.

I struggled as a student when it came to studying and I’m retaking the mcat, but relearning my study strategies have helped me out really well and I actually did better on my practice full length test today than i did in my first few practice tests last year

I love videos on the positive outlook of medical school and the tips on how to cope with the humongous workload and actually perform better. The media is full of negative feedback but never talk about the positive outcomes of becoming a doctor that should be spread more

Sadly you might not know your entire class due to covid. I started in 2020, didn't meet my class in person until the end of first year at a brief barbeque in the park. I still only know half of my class maybe.

That was good. We used to "joke" that M.D. stood for "memory device" and that a high I.Q. was actually a liability in practicing medicine/surgery.
Med. school is actually FUN...an enjoyable experience, if you let it be. But whether you do or not, it's a life-altering experience for everyone. However, if you say to yourself early in your studies, that you're going into a field that "matches easily" like emergency med., for instance and plan to spend your working life in some ER or other, you will not take maximum advantage of everything med. school has to offer. In short, that attitude will likely result in becoming a mediocre practitioner. Then why bother? If you go to med. school, do it right and give it your all. All of the rewards are worth it...including the financial sacrifices. However, if your goal is money (be honest with yourself) and you want to do something sort of medical/surgical, go into one of the dental specialties. Many are much more lucrative that medical practice and you can still do a lot of good for people.
