How to find a good psychiatrist

Thank you for this encouraging video. I have been seeing psychiatrists since 1987 due to an anxiety disorder and all have been most sympathetic. These days I am going through hell with my current doc who has a "my way or the highway" attitude, is rude, doesn't listen, and yes has a HUGE and most imposing desk she resides in (Red Flag as you mentioned) and is definitely not giving an accurate assessment at all. I'm currently going through the arduous process of finding another doctor with a much needed second opinion. I pray I find the right one for me soon.

I had a psychiatrist who prescribed me medications that had the most severe interaction classified by the FDA, which is what my pharmacist told me. I had a really bad reaction to it and told her about it, eventually I was tapered off one of the medications but still am recovering. Some psychiatrist to me either push medications on patients or are too backloaded with so many clients that they can’t accurately assess and keep track of each person as best as they ought to. I’ve expressed to my new psychiatrist that I don’t want to switch medications or be put on anything new, but he keeps telling me that my mental health issues are a ‘mechanical’ problem, and that while non-medication alternatives like diet, exercise, and therapy are good, they won’t fix the problem. At this point I’m frustrated and unsure, the chemical imbalance theory is just that, a theory, and to with a straight face suggest that the essence of psychiatry is that a pill will fix a chemical imbalance in the brain that’s elucidating a patients symptoms, is entirely misleading and ludicrous. Keep in mind this new psychiatrist of mine did his residency at Harvard, and yet I still don’t trust him, so now I really don’t know what makes a good psychiatrist a good fit. He wants to put me on two SSRI’s, which is a nice way to increase the probability that a patient will encounter serotonin toxicity, which most of the time presents mildly, I don’t want to go to a bunch of ER’s again like I did last time.

I’m not sure if you read these or not but I hope you would. I wanted to let you know that this was very Helpful to me.

I especially liked the example regarding the doctor/patient seating arrangement. I l will definitely be using that little trick.

Someone such as yourself can be of great value to people that want get to get help managing a complex life or of course the people that are struggling mentally just to name a few.

Very useful information for during a visit: the major areas of interaction, environment and credentials were covered. Also, the sources for unbiased evaluation of practices would be helpful.

Is it normal for a Dr. to get irritated of you asking too many questions? Also wants to run blood work on me from time to time to make sure I'm taking my meds.

Psychiatrists either put me in seclusion OR force me to take meds. Usually both. And I forgot the purpose of this comment. Where do u even find a good one? All of mine have so bad. Malicious

Well, these tips don’t really help because for them to work, you first have to visit the psychiatrist and waste money. Thus, if you go by these tips then you will potentially waste a lot of money, which in turn will make you crazy! So no, these tips don’t help. I believe word of mouth is the only best way to find out. One might have to try talking to patients as they step out of a clinic of the psychiatrist that you are interested in. That would look a bit odd but it would work way better.
