5 Minute Habits to Transform Your Health and Happiness with Dr Rangan Chatterjee

Why is it that so many of us find it hard to stick to a new diet or lifestyle plan? We all start off well enough – full of energy and optimism but then the novelty soon wears off and life gets in the way. After some time, we are right back where we first started. The fact is, most health plans are based on the common, but incorrect assumption that we can make sweeping and lasting changes to our health by relying solely on willpower and motivation. But for the vast majority of us, this is just not true. This is exactly why I wrote my new book, ‘Feel Better in 5’– I want to empower people to make changes in their life not just in the short term, but ones that will stand the test of time.

This week, my good friend Dr Ayan Panja returns to my Feel Better, Live More podcast and puts me in the hot seat. We talk about how 5 minute chunks of time really can change your life, the importance of human connection when trying to make lifestyle change, why I am such a fan of a rounded approach to health and the ripple effect – how one small change in one aspect of your life can very quickly ripple into other areas. We also discuss what, in our collective 40 years of clinical experience, we have found to actually work with our patients when making lifestyle change. We delve into the latest in behaviour science and how we can use this to help us make new healthy habits. Finally, I explain to Ayan that my goal in writing ‘Feel Better in 5’ was to make health as accessible as possible to people of all backgrounds hence the reason nearly all the recommendations within it are completely free. Ayan finishes by sharing some of his tops tips. I really enjoyed taking some time out to sit down and chat with one of my best friends – I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did!

Dr. Chatergee. You are amazing! At last someone who knows what's needed!!!! Yaaaayyyy!!! As an ex-fitness coach I see most professionals seem to have no understanding whatsoever about ordinary people and what they need. Most have high standards, "ideal" workouts etc. etc. And this perfectionist approach misses the mark entirely. You get this. Your prime focus is on what works for people. A lot of professionals don't do this at all! WELL done. You're a genius! Can't wait to read your books and apply them to myself.

Love LOVED this podcast I personally BELIEVE in everything you both talked about. I've just purchased my book. I initially hesitated in buying as I do practice meditation, exercise, time for myself, try to have enough sleep, rest & eat healthily so wasn't sure if I would gain anything more as listen to you regularly BUT you convinced me especially about the bit spending 5 mins connecting with someone you like/Love (this brought tears to my eyes) & about making these part of your routine at the SAME time EVERY DAY this is something I don't do & you're right, I often have to consider which routine shall I do, meditation, stretching etc. Which takes time & has the reverse effect. This I will now do. I love the idea of bringing this into schools, something I would be passionate about doing myself. Look forward to seeing you at The Barbican in February. THANK YOU

I love the idea of five minute habits. I can not wrap my mind around a 30 minute meditation or work out but I can handle five minutes.

How can we get these messages to the people who need it now more than ever? - families stuck in high rise tower blocks with young children who must be climbing the walls, older people who are isolated more than ever now under lockdown, teenagers who most likely are retreating into the virtual world more and more, stressed NHS and care workers, etc etc

There is no magic pill, doctors are not magicians. Every person should & must take responsibility for their own health. If you think otherwise good luck to you. I have severe FM/ ME and came back from the abyss by just starting to listen to my body and read & learn as much as I could about my disease

Really interesting work, thankyou.
Have you studied G I Gurdjieff's work? His work says we have 3 centers - mind, body, heart. Also being not present is an issue. Worth looking at!
