Statements like "the body starts to work under less effort" & as you get older "your body requires less energy to maintain itself" are simply not valid in the context of running. Running is destructive to the body at any age - and applies an array of damage (stress and micro-tissue tears) with regular running - and this reality is magnified the older you get (as your metabolism slows). As you get older the body does not repair itself nightly as it did when you were younger and my require more effort and more energy to perform at the same level, the very opposite of what you're saying - in the context of running. An older person who runs regularly needs supplemental compensation to endure and support continuous repair of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and more - that regular running requires. I have to consume 2g of protein (energy) for every 1lb of weight - or twice the recommended amount (I'm a daily runner over age 60).
