Very good point, parents who insist that everything is a phase, cannot then turn around and complain that you're no longer familiar to them when they've put no effort into knowing the you that you have become

I’m starting to suspect that parents insisting everything is a phase and expecting permanency of the 4-year-old self aren’t opposite things, they’re two sides of the same coin. I think those parents want their children to remain the cute 4-year-olds who loved them unconditionally and thoughtlessly forever, and consciously or subconsciously reject anything that forces them to see their child changing from that 4-year-old.

Oh my mom skips that step entirely and has always just invented things that I supposedly like because I was curious about it once.

“You love this!” Nope, my sister does. I’ve expressed that I don’t like this EVERY time you make this mistake but it keeps happening

Or the even worse "you don't like such and such so i didn't get it" when it's something you love

Me every time I say I don't like bananas for the last decade at least "When you were smaller you used to love Bananas" I think we've long established that my like has dissipated.

My mother maintained til the day she died that i loved pickles as a kid. I and the rest of my family on the other hand recall clearly me at the age of four throwing up at the meer smell of pickles. No mom, no. 😑

And then there's the thing that youve STAYED interested in since you were knee-high to a Sand Mouse, but they don't care for it, so they don't do anything involving it, despite it being the one thing they know you've loved since you were a goober.

The conversations I have
"Mother, I want this thing"
"But you never did before"
Like, what? Isn't that the point?

My mom insists that thor was my favorite avenger... its hulk and black panther, its never been thor. Not even as a kid, despite this, she insists ive liked thor since i was a toddler, which even if it was true it isnt now, which in turn means that she hasnt bothered to learn anything about me in 13 years! All while claiming that i cant be a homosexual because "its a phase I'll grow out of" as well as that i "don't really like rock and heavy metal cause its just a phase" even though ive been listening to the same genres since i was 10. Everything's a phase unless they like it

My mom knows me very well, that’s because she’s made it clear to ME that she’s interested in (and loves) who I am and will be. She’s made it clear that she’s a safe space to talk about anything with so I do! I fill her in on everything that’s going on whether it’s a video game or music or friendships or whatever. But that’s only because I KNOW she wants to hear it because she SHOWS me she wants to hear it

My mum said she wants a panda tattoo, I explained pandas haven't been my favourite animal in like two years, it's frogs now. She cried. My ENTIRE room is full of frogs, I have three different frog hats, a frog bag, 6 frog plushies (Yes I'm autistic) and I'm like??? Mother where the hell have you been?

parents often forget relationship maintenance. I can safely say my parents stopped knowing me from age 12, because they never bothered getting to know me when I started to actually form a fleshed out personality

My older sister will do this sometimes, i call it "Sweetie Belle-ing it" in reference to a MLP episode where rarity keeps treating sweetie belle like how she did as a little kid (taking her to a puppet show for example) lol

My parents were always on point with what I liked. Even my dad with my clothes and my mom with little useful gifts. It’s been six years since my mom passed and three since my dad. I’m sad that a lot of my most favorite things I’ve used and outfits that I’ve worn for years are starting to wear out.

I literally refuse to tell my mom I even like most things because then she thinks a mild interest or enjoyment of something means I love it or I’m obsessed with it
