This happened in my D&D campaign.

We were asked “so, now that the big bad is defeated, what will your characters be doing?” And after a few of them answered about where they will be going, it was my turn and I just said “he will be having a nervous breakdown because the only people that accepted him in his life all left him once he was no longer ‘of use’ to them”

I actually like this trope, but only when said characters only split up to follow their own paths and goals/dreams. Like "hey guys i'm glad i could help and everything but i kinda wanna open up a mead shop, but make sure you visit so we can all have parties"

Castlevania anime did this amazingly, because you see the fall out of what that does to them, especially alucard who spirals into such a depression that if he didn’t reunite with them I think he would’ve turned out like his dad

This is like the first episode of Leverage, they do the “it was one job and now we’ll go our separate ways”, except the characters also decided it was bs and decided to go and commit more crimes together

Clearly you all go your separate ways after sharing a final look and disappear into hiding, only to be roped back into the gang again for "one more heist" years later

I applied this logic to a D&D campaign that started with us being level 7, and as such I and one friend of mine decided to make a shared backstory of adventurers whose campaign had already finished (explaining the big level); and after defeating the big bad, my character and my friend's just decided to open a bakery together and retire from adventuring.

At least until our bakery caught on fire and we had to hit the aventuring train yet again...

Sometimes it is sad to see characters split paths after being together for so long. They often split as "friends who have goals that require different paths now, but we would still team up if the occasion should arise".

That’s basically the premise of the opening to Scooby-Doo: Zombie Island. But they all get back together to reconnect and relive old memories while solving what turns out to be the first actual ghost they’ve found

I think characters keeping their connections as close as they were during the story is a touch unrealistic, extraordinary times and all that. BUT, the idea that everyone just breaks into little isolated hermits is weird and off-putting. Like, sure, maybe everyone isn't eating every meal around a campfire together like they used to, but the gang has to get back together occasionally just to catch up from time to time.

I don't mind them going their separate ways as long as it's like they're living their lives but with their new friends still in it. Like they still write or call or meet up and whatnot.

This is another reason to love Dragonball. As the story progresses, they just keep adding more people to this built family. So many past enemies now more like family.

This is likely a hold over from very old stories, from a time when if you lived far enough away from someone you wouldn't reasonably be able to contact them again. It seems so jarring now because we can usually contact anyone anywhere anytime without much trouble. So if you're in a situation where everyone needs to go somewhere far enough away for their personal lives, they just likely won't ever meet again

We do need stories where the group managed the big thing and now have to deal with the emptiness of mundanity and how they rebuild a sense of community now that the big battle is won and they build a more resilient relationship now that they see each other outside of the dire situation
