In the 90's my friends and I ripped out the shoulder pads. My grandmother used her bra strap to hold shoulder pads in place.

The times I wore shoulder pads, they came attached to the article of clothing, such as sweaters, blouses, jackets, etc. And yes, as I see someone else mentioned, we cut out the shoulder pads as soon as it was 1990. We also stopped wearing hosiery and perming our hair.

I find this very interesting. There are a few garments I own with shoulder pads in (one my grandmother bought soon enough before she died that she never took the tag off, so I'm not sure if it counts as second hand or not, two are hand-me-downs from my mother) but I wasn't aware that standalone shoulder pads were a thing.
If they don't have the fabric cover, are you just wearing them straight on your skin? Is that comfortable?
Also, would adding shoulder pads like that work with a modern-cut garment? I worry there might not be room for them, but if 80s clothes can work either way then maybe the bulk isn't enough to be a deal-breaker there.
