The study of stoic philosophy is the best free psychotherapy you'll ever get.

Mastery of one's emotions is one of the most powerful disciplines anyone can achieve.

Well said, sir, from beginning to end, as usual. I appreciated the emphasis on therapy and on self-control, and the mention of a study regarding sleep, towards the end. Backing up opinions with data makes this Jeremiah happy.

Lots of the times mass-media has an impact on how men show emotions. Just because they have stoicism and don't show them in public, that doesn't mean they don't have them and not feel them at all. Lots of dating gurus say that : men should't show any emotion to women, or else they will be dumped or not find a girlfriend at all. This advice is so bad in so many different ways, because if you are attached to a person, you should not be afraid to show her how you feel in the certain moment. Of course, that doesn't mean you should always be a crybaby either. As a seperate argument, quite often women are more prone to react in a certain way from certain emotions, either if it's bursting into tears or screaming at someone, hence the example you gave. I am glad you approached this subject !

I speak of Emotional Intelligence all the time. I also understand the Emotional Quotient.
I know a guy who has an international business the helps businesses and corporations learn about EQ and EI.
Unfortunately I work with people who have never heard of this concept.

Very good; powerful advice as always. James, I must say, you have come a long way in a very short time. As I said before, I am proud of you.

I teach my 5 year old son that a man needs to have self-control.
This is not easy for a kid that age to always understand but it does seem to help him.
I am a very blessed man.

One does not master one's emotions

One learns to master one's response to them

Sorry for my bad english, but I would add this : sometimes (but not always), faking no pain is the beginning of feeling no pain, as the romans would say 2000 years ago. (Quizz : in which James Bond episode can we hear such a stoical lesson ?)

Nice video, as usual! James, not related to the subject at hand, but I wanted to know your opinion on ties. I now haven't worn a tie in well over five years. At least quarterly, I travel to Manhattan for meetings (I live in Boston), and even there, it seems more fitting just to wear a nice oxford shirt, open collar, and a well pressed suit. The vibe I get lately is that men who wear suits AND ties are doing it because they have to....more senior managers or executives don't have to, and as such they deliberately go tie-less. I like the look either way, but am curious about your opinion around this trend.
