Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999) - 'Anakin Defeats Sebulba' scene [1080p]

Most of the pod-race sequence is wisely left unscored, with the excellent sound-effects adding the necessary tension. But as the race reaches its climax, and the crowd releases their joy at the end, composer John Williams provides the required lift.

Someone on a different video actually figured out what happened.

See, both of Anakin's engines use single-phase motors (they're basicaly gigantic turbofans with a custom-designed afterburner system), and Sebulba sabotaged what was holding the left motor's capacitor in place.

Capacitors are needed in single-phase motors to run - they basically are responsible for the rotating magnetic field so the motor "knows" which way to turn - when the capacitor fell off, the lack of a rotating magnetic field caused the motor to vibrate and heat up from friction.

So what did he do? Temporarily shut down the left engine, and then rewire wire both engines to run in _series_ so they share the right engine's capacitor.

This little kid built that kind of redundancy into his podracer just in case.

Sebulba's Pod sounds JUST like my 1985 F-250 after a long Highway run when I put it in Park or Neutral. I may end up yelling, "POO DOO!!!!".
