Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Palpatine's Manipulations. 4K ULTRA HD.

Palpatine was a masterful and patient manipulator. Emphasis on the word patient. He put things in motion long before we saw him in The Phantom Menace and carefully played countless people like pianos. His intelligence coupled with his desire for power makes him one of the most formidable villains you’ll encounter in fiction.

As a child, you love all the fight scenes. As an adult, you like these scenes.

Funny thing is is that Valorum was one of the few people to actually figure out what Palpatine was doing. During the clone wars he did a bunch of investigating and he figured out that Palpatine was part of a plot to overthrow the republic. Unfortunately Palpatine figured out what he was doing and had his speeder rigged with a bomb and he was killed, and the killing was just blamed on the separatists. This was pre Disney stuff by the way.

It’s insane how this one man was pulling every string at once

"Enter the bureaucrats... the *true* rulers of the Republic. And on the payroll of the Trade Federation, I might add. This is where Chancellor Valorum's strength will disappear."
This scene is so underappreciated.

This is actually not as boring as people said

A lot of people say that the politics in the prequels were boring, but in hindsight, they were a great part of the trilogy. They showed the decline of the Republic and Palpatine's rise to power (The Phantom Menace), how he started the Clone Wars (Attack of the Clones), and how he was able to overthrow the Republic and turn it into the Galactic Empire (Revenge of the Sith). It's also very good for world-building too. It makes the galaxy feel more complex and alive.

The Sequel Trilogy would've benefited greatly from having a little politics here and there. They didn't need to have as much as the prequels, but it would've been nice to know how the New Republic ran things before _and_ after the First Order blew up the Hosnian system.

As a child, you're probably bored with this scene and wondering when the space battles and lightsaber fights are going to come back. As a grown up, you realize that you're watching the seeds being planted for the Empire, and it's kind of creepy and ominous.

"Now they will elect a new chancellor. A strong chancellor. One that will not let the tragedy continue."
>Senate elects Amidala
"This was not the plan"

Can we talk about what a fantastic job Natalie and Keira did. So many years after the fact and I still have difficulty telling Who’s Who in certain scenes.

it’s funny to go back and watch how palpatine really did rig it all from the beginning.

God, the way the senate chamber is structured is so AWESOME!

The guy whispering to the Chancellor in this scene is Palpatine's assistant in the later movies and one of the people who knows he's a Sith Lord.

The original trilogy is like meeting an old friend, the prequel is like drinking a fine wine, the clone wars is like having a good time with your friends at the club, and the sequel trilogy is like the hangover after

Something most people don't notice is that Palpatine had the Trade Federation blockade Naboo because it was HIS home planet

It clears him of suspicion for any back dealings and allows him to start "fighting" against corruption from a reasonable motivation

From the time Moff Tarkin walked in to the Death Star Conference Room saying the emperor has officially disbanded the Senate, I was always curious what the senate was like. Even as a kid.

It's really sad that palpatine was right all along about the senate and the republic. He actually brought order back when he was elected as chancellor. He used everyones weaknesses against them to achieve his goal. Once the jedi were purged and the empire was formed, he let the burocrats back into the senate while he just ruled as the dictator he truly was and giving the ilusion of democracy with the imperial senate. Andor resembled this perfectly in every scene with mon mothma
