Podrace Final Lap - Anakin Wins Boonta Eve Classic [4K HDR] - Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

One of the goals of the Phantom Menace Extended Edition Supercut is to create the most complete version of the film's Podrace sequence reasonably possible, including not only the extra scenes that were in the 2001 DVD release, but also the extra deleted scenes that were not restored into the cut. I don't necessarily think these scenes add as much to the world building as the Episode II and III deleted scenes do, but over the decades many fans have loved the podrace sequence and racing in Star Wars in general, so I think a more complete version of the race is worth creating just for its own sake.

A 4K HDR sample from my Extended Star Wars Episode I Cut, simply titled "The Phantom Menace - Extended Edition". As of today, both cuts have now been updated to a new 2.0 version, featuring several minor tweaks in audio, updates to the HDR color timing (especially for Episode I), tweaks to transitions, and brand new A.I. upscales of many of the deleted scenes. A total of 7 deleted scenes have been restored in the film.

Both of my Extended Episode I and II cuts are available in both 4K HDR and 1080p SDR, along with my other edits like the 4.5 hour Revenge of the Sith - The Siege of Mandaore Supercut the, Star Wars Episode IV - The Rogue Cut, and many more!

Anakin Skywalker's pod racer control arm snagged on the hydraulic line for the right engine of Sebulba's podracer. When he broke loose, the arm put too much strain on the line, causing it to snap and causing the right engine to become unresponsive. Thus, when Sebulba pulled away, his left engine responded to his commands, but the right engine didn't. Thus, this explains why the left engine flew off first while the right one stayed on course, resulting in his signature crash landing. Well done Anakin!

One of the things that's so fun to notice, watching this now, is watching Anakin THINK. He truly is an absolutely incredible pilot, because he is so creative with how to maneuver whatever he's flying -- including using 3 dimensions in podracing, which is normally kept close to the ground, like when he flips sideways over the other racer to get ahead of him -- and he's so skilled at understanding how to get the maximum performance out of whatever he's flying too. He problem-solves extremely quickly, but it's all visible on-screen and it also ALL MAKES SENSE. It's not like "Well that was stupid, that wouldn't actually work, " it's like "No, that was a genuinely good idea, and he carried it out in a way that made sense."

Aside from how episode 1 has been historically perceived by the fandom, its actually mind boggling that a human child won a supersonic alien drag racing tournament with his little, self-built clunker. The fact that any human could simply react well enough to pilot a podracer, let alone compete against other podracers helmed by alien species with significantly better vision & reflexes, is beyond incredible. Its not really acknowledged quite enough just how amazing Anakin's win was here.
